my car keeps blowing out valve cover gaskets, i've repaced the pcv and re routed the suction line in front of the turbo inlet, and checked the breather at the back of the valve cover, its all clear, so wtf? it's not burning any oil, i was thinking about the oil seperator on the side of the block, where the pcv hose runs into, do they plug up? if so has anyone found a place to buy them cause ford has discontinued the part and they were $150 cdn. when they were available. has anyone ran into this problem and if so how was it fixed?

Yes you need a check valve in the PCV line before the PCV VALVE. I use ones that come on a cummins diesel. Ford has a special PCV valve for the TC motor. You can make a valve with 2 brass fittings and a steel ball. Go to a plumbing store and buy a 3/8 barbed to 3/8 female pipe. Then buy a 3/8 barb to 3/8 male pipe then put a steel ball in the female side tighten up the male fitting into the female and make shure the ball rattles. Install vertically in the pcv line so that preasure cant push twords the pcv valve. Presto check valve city. Works great.
that my friends is the sign of a TRUE mechanic! not a parts swapping boy.
you have to improvise and think of new things!
Tom if i could i would pat you on the back! haha
Well, when you have enough experience and you understand exactly how every piece goes together and what it does and how it does it... then there is no need for a parts catalogue; you can just fabricate your own parts.
And a cyber pat on the back is definately deserved!
so is there a check valve in the metal box on the side of the block that the pcv runs to? should i remove it? i'm wondering if it's plugged and keeping pressure in the engine, i've already rerouted the pcv so it doesn't see boost so i shouldn't need a check valve.

From the oil separater on the intake side of block. Come a rubber hose and turns a 90 between the distributor and block. The pcv check valve is there. Ford only part the autoparts one are junk [my experience] Then goes to lower intake me I added another check valve in that hose. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...5/100_5629.jpg
Please picture little differant shows my 5.0 throttle body throttle cable mount.
also Ford has a better than the normal cork valve cover gasket. It is rubber with metal insert.
Ford part number F57Z-6584-A Of course if engine is well worn and too much blowby. Only one cure for that. Rebuild. But I would try these if not already done it.
This is a brake booster check valve. It can be found on any late 80's Nissan at your local Pick-n-Pull yard. They are in the large vac line on the firewall to the left of the brake booster. I've been running this between my PCV and upper intake for 3 years on my '86 TC with no issues at all. Junkyard check valve
Yes you can use the nissan but the plastic gets CRUDDY. But it works ok. I used to use a check valve from the stock intercooler that came with the coupe. I always use a front mount so i have spairs around. The honda also has a nice valve. And the mitisu also does. The nissan unit is fine to use. But the one i make gets everyone going GAGA. Love to do that TOM
the check valve is ONLY good to stop boost from travelling from the intake through the pcv system down to the oil pan, my intake hose is blocked off, and the pcv valve is tied into the upper breather tube that runs to the turbo inlet, so it should actually suck the air out of the oil pan, but it doesn't. i figured if the engine had blow by i'd burn oil or smoke a bit, maybe even have lower compression but i have no issues in that part, so i was thinking the oil breather on the side of the block was the culprit, cant get one through ford there discontinued, gonna see about a dealer gasket for the valve cover, the fel pro rubber gaskets @$40 it destroyed 2 in 2 weeks, and the ultra copper rtv was the longest lasting but it started leaking after 3 weeks.

ok so i think it is the oil seperator, there is nothing coming out of the hose when its running, no air or noise or nothing. so anyone know how to remove it? i don't see any bolts around it, and it's pretty rusty, i don't want to break it taking it out cause i want to test it after it's removed.

if your talking about the little box on the side of the box under the intake manifold right there where the block curves out for the crank all you do is just pull it up and out.
and if that is your problem i have had one of those stop up too. i just put carb cleaner in it let it sit for a min shake it all around and dump it out. and repeat as necessary.

not a problem. apparently that was a pretty common thing with these little motor. i dont know why but it works.
and by the way when you go to put it back in the block be sure to put a little bit of RTV around the base of it so that way it wont pull out of the block and water, dirt and contanimantes can get inside.
hope that helps.

i'm attempting it saturday morning, i tried to get it out today but it looks like the intake must be removed, so it's gonna be a long day tomarrow.

I have a question if the oil seperator is plugged . (and they do plug up) Then how does the boost preasure get into the crankcase?????????? Evinthal where did you get that link for the home made valve. Thats how i made mine??????????? Well there are alot of sharp guys out there other than ME. Thats the valve i make. Hay 75 where did you get that valve it looks neat. And what did it come from. I also use a plumbing check valve that i get from a plumbing supply house.
