There are tons of threads on this in the archives. You should have a Borg Warner t-5. Any reputable company can supply you with a good aftermarket shifter (ie. Hurst, Steeda, MGW, Pro 5.0, etc.)

I put the hurst short throw in my 92 and love it. it was easy to install and a good price. Completely different from the stock of course.

The Steeda Tri-Ax is a favorite.

Keep in mind "short throw" has nothing to do with the length of the shifter. It refers to the distance the shifter travels to engage the gear.

Good point... Alternatively, with a shorter shifter handle makes for a smaller radius and the distance traveled at the top of the handle will be less. So it will seem like a short thorw shifter. So how does a "short throw" shifter work as compared to a stock one?

SM90, it's all a matter of leverage and positive stops. The shifter is a lever. By playing with the fulcrum, you can get more movement out of the bottom with less movement at the top. Then you add in the stops. These are adjusted upon installation so that the shifter doesn't travel any further than it has to to engage the gear. One of the common failures in a T5 is broken or bent shift forks caused by ham-fisted drivers yanking on the shifter. The stops prevent over travel and at the same time create a more efficient gear change event.

Yeah, it will work fine. Just make sure to get one for your trans. I have a Triax in my Cobra (T-56) and have no issues. I put Hursts in two previous stangs. They all work the same. Set your shift points for the least amount of throw to completely engage each gear. The shifter will prevent overtravel and make your shifts feel like they are on rails. One of the best mods anyone can do to a stock mustang. While it doesn't increase performance, it is trans insurance and makes the car feel like a race car.

the short throw is completely different from the stock. there is virtually zero slop and is near impossible to miss a gear. everything is much more precise and tighter.

It will not come set up. Before you button everything back up, you push in the clutch, engage the shifter and let out gently until the car goes in gear. If the car can't go in, adjust the shifter just until it can fully engage and no more. You will understand more clearly when you install it. There are bolts on each side of the shifter base which allow you to adjust the shifter stops each way. Do just enough to engage without overtravel.

Pro 5.0 makes the best, period...all the rest are runner ups...I know, I've had them, I always regretted having them and take them out and get the best: Pro 5.0, no I'm not a sales rep for them, will make you car faster and you'll never miss a shift.
