1993 Mustang 2.3 died on me. jumped and driven home.
was at chipotle with friends/gf drove there everything was cool. after we eat i go to jump in and go. and its cranking its trying to start it just never turns over. so i try a few times let it sit. then try with gas. nothing. got my friend to help me jump it let it charge for like 5 minutes maybe. then try...cranks and turns over slow but sure after having the key turned for probably 5 seconds. so im assuming my battery is dying. i have no idea when the previous owner replaced it and it looks old. i guess i could look for a date on it in the morning. but im pretty sure i need a new one? the terminals dont look corroded and the cables look fine as 16 year old cables can look.
any tell tale signs its the battery just being old and not my alternator?
should i go to walmart and drop a new battery in or swing by jiffy lube(only thing open)
ill keep you guys posted.
the gf was obviously thrilled that all this happened when it was raining. :confuse d::sh ocked:

Try taking it to Advanced Auto Parts or some auto store and have them test the battery. If its not the battery buy/rent a voltmeter and test the alternator.

i'm not trying to be a d**k or anything like that, but did u make sure there was enough water in the battery? sometimes the easiest, most obvious things are the ones we space out on.
also, i have a 92, so i'm not 100% if this will work on your car, but when my alternator was dying on me i learned that if u turn the ignition key forward
-without cranking the engine-, if the battery light stays on then the alternator is bad.
yea i figured out the water in the battery thing on my grand am haha.
so me and my dad figured out its my alternator i turned on the car and it started fine and we unplugged the + battery cable and started turning on assescories. slow but sure i watched the voltmeter go down down down. so its def not making enough amps to charge the battery at idle. with lights, windshoield wipers, stereo, and defroster on(was raining yesterday)
and yea while i had the key turned but not cranked yestreday the battery light stayed on and i thought that was odd.
so i guess ill be getting a new alternator soon. but for now im gonna be driving my grand am around...lammeeee oh well atleast ill have abs, a cd player, and power windows lol.

DUDE let me give you some real good advice. NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER. Disconnect a battery with an engine running to test an alternator. The battery filters all the noize out of the system. You are the luckiest person on earth because its FRY the electronics in the car when you do that. Test the alternator with a voltmeter or a load box. The charging system should hold 13.7-14.7 at 1500 RPM with a medium to heavy load on the system. I cringe at the thought when people do that. I had a customer with a saturn that did that and it cost him $1500.00 bucks to replace the electronics. The alternator when not loaded will spike past 40 volts to the car without the load of the battery. An alternator is EXTERNALLY EXCITED it neads a battery to work properly. A generator is self excited and can sometimes keep an engine running without a battery. Its an old wives tail about disconnecting a battery to see if an alternator is good. And very dangerous to the electronics.TOM RENZO
lucky is my third middle name =D haha thanks tom ill keep that in mind. you know whats worse? after we connected the cables to my friends car i was ready to attach it to my battery when i looked over...i was like wait a second we had the cables on the wrong terminals haha(in a rush since it was pouring). my friend was like what would happen if we didnt catch that...i was like uhm either my or your battery would explode. haha.
gonna order the alt at the end of the month my gf cleaned me out this weekend lol...oh well. i need a new job so i can afford to play with this thing. ive got a list going of things it needs we are on like #4 haha. alt was on the list but now its bumped to the top.

Always be very careful when jumping a car. If you ever saw a battery expload you will take my advice and pay attention. If a battery exploads on you it will definately ruin your life. Batterys are like 5 sticks of dynimite. Always be careful. I have seen many a new car totally destroyed with a backwards hook up. Not to mention 2 quarts of sulfuric acid spraying all over you> Jumping a car is SEREYOUS BUSINESS AND NOT TAKEN LIGHTLY. Be careful and PEACE TOM
agreed tom. my dad had one blow up in his face for some reason. dont know why everything was hooked up right and what not i guess it just decided to blow that day. but it blew in his face and people came running out of convience store with gallon jugs of water and dumped all over him.

First is he ok thats the important thing?? Any scars??? i had 3 batterys blow on me in my lifetime and many with excessive gassing. Man batterys are dangerous. To protect yourself never connect the ground to the battery. Use the engine block as far away from the battery as possible. This accomplishes two thing. First it prevents cables hooked up backwards. If it is jumped from block to block the ground will not be reversed. The battery that is the ticking time bomb is the dead one. The dead one is the one that gases. DONT mess up a jump start pay attention and double check the connections. Always wear eye protection and always keep tools off the top of the battery. Hope this helps.:headsc ratch:
yeah he's fine. that happened long before i was born on his mustang II. and agreed thats the way the teach it now. to hook them to the engine for the ground. not the battery. those hydrochloric acids are a mess!

when i was little my dads dodge dakota was overheating blew a hose and was overheating so we duct taped it and got some antifreeze in it. it was idleing and circulating the fluid and just chilling my dad goes to check the cap and it just explodes off showering us with hot antifreeze but mostly all over my neck. hurt like hell but it wasnt that bad i guess. and im fine no scars. just another reason to stay away from the mopars.
ordering my alt. getting a reman. should be here in a few days im pretty sure i can just do it in my driveway in a few minutes.

ummmm, You do realize how much pressure is going through any radiator with the it idling at operating temperature? That's just plain inexperience and lack of knowledge. It's good that you or anyone else in these stories didn't get hurt though. And don't hate on the mopars! My second favourite car is the Shelby Charger (I guess I have a fetish for 80's shoe boxes ).
and nah kurt i dont smoke soooo now explosions, falling asleep and burning the house down, setting my gfs hair on fire, no terrible smell in my stang, no batteries or gas tanks exploding.....none of that no thank you.....plus i dont have enough money to afford a bad habbit like that.

i also adjusted my idle cuz it was running alittle low and rough but now its great.
