Question 2.3 -> 5.0 Instrument Panel Swap

Hi Everybody!

I found a great deal ($20!!!) on a 140MPH/220KPH gauge cluster out of a 1988 5.0... As I already have all of the interior out of Alice to be restored and painted I thought that this would be a perfect time to upgrade to this instrument panel (For those of you who may be cops, I will not be using the 2nd half of the speedo, it's merely just for looks[wink.wink.nudge.nudge]).

Question 1: Will this 1988 dash hook up to my 1990 2.3 harness?
Question 2: How can I roll the mileage back to 0? (FYI: I am putting in a rebuilt 2.3 turbo and would like to act as if this is a brand new car!)

Thanks Everybody,

Steve

Thanks dude,

So here's the idea... Take the both of the clusters apart, use the speedo and "background" from the 140MPH cluster and put into 2.3 cluster, roll the milage back to 000000, put back together (not all in that order).

Thanks, Steve

Just found out some new info on my gauge cluster. The guy has 2 of them and they are in Miles and not Kilometers... On another good note, the clear plastic covers are broken, which means that I can buy them both of him for dirt cheap! Seeing as how I live in Canada, this could potentially look cool and different!

Is the 90 model a airbag car? And putting in a nonairbag car. The bottom of cluster is cut out more on the air bag car cluster. If it is yes but is a pain. I did it airbag to non airbag car. Here what you do. Dismantle the 88 and remove the speedometer. Now you will have reuse all the rest including the lens. Now remove the airbag speedometer. Remove the needle. Just pulls off it is on tight. This is the scary part. Now pull the needle stop out of the front. Once removed peel easily the 140mph label. Now remove the speedometer section from the clear plastic pieces. Now do the same to the 88 speedometer. Now take the clear piece from the 88 and mount the 140 speeometer to it. Now install the 140 speedometer. You will now notice a section of the label missing at bottom left. Now cut that piece out of the old 88 label [Just a little bigger than necessar to cover the seam. Now reassemble everything. You are done. If this is confusing or question just ask. The rest is useless but could sell the tach to someone doing a 5.0 changeover from a 2.3 Maurice

Thanks Maurice!

I will likely not be using the 140MPH speedo, but I will be getting my hands on it and likely just gonna sell it on ebay or to one you guys. I am trading him an instrument panel lens for the whole instrument panel. Lucky I had a few extra!

BUT... I did manage to roll the miles/kilometers back to 000000.0! I guess the details of how I did it exactly will not be released, but I do have a few pictures that you guys can get the sense of what happened. To tell you the truth, it was pretty tough. And if you are doing it for the first time, it will probably take a few hours. I still don't have it working quite right because when I turn the speedo the top odometer (the one that counts the total miles on the car) does not turn even though the input shaft going to gear does turn. I will figure it out eventually though...

Here are some pics:

Steve (hope i didn't break any legality rules)

In fact, is there someone who knows if rolling back the odometer on a car is illegal if you never plan on selling the car or if you are putting a brand new motor in?

Ilegal no matter what but as long as you dont list it as that just say it was replaced with an odometer that rolled over your good.
