Question 1993 Mustang 2.3L Won't Rev Past 3k Rpm?

I have a 93 notch 2.3L auto that has a bone stock engine it won't rev past 3k rpm almost like it hit's a rev limiter. I also have a friend that had one it would do the same exact thing and his was a stick that was the only difference between ours. So I just figured it was a rev limiter until I have another friend that just bought one and his revs all the way to redline. So that's the reason I'm asking this question anyone know why??

can you tell us how its running when it only hits the 3k? is it like its bogging down? or runs perfectly but hits the 3k and just chills? does it rev past 3k while driving but not at idle or not at all? please give some more info and we can help point you in the right direction

It runs perfectly fine no bogging when it hit's 3k almost like it just hit's a rev limiter and I haven't even tried revving it past 3k in park or neutral. I can go try that now I'll be back in like 10 minutes.

It won't rev past 3 k in park, neutral, or even if I hold it in 1st gear and rev it out. It seems like it has the power to keep revving but it just stops at 3k. The only thing I can think of is a bad ignition control module. I don't want to spend any money or time on it since the engine is coming out anyways so maybe I'll just throw that module on real fast tomorrow since my friend has a extra one laying around.

I doubt it because it would most likely smell like rotten eggs and bog/run like crap if it did.

and no not necessarily would it run like crap. i had a 98 s 10 that did that had a bad cat and it wouldnt run past 3 or 3500. ran perfect under that. i would recommend checking how much exhaust is coming out of the tail pipe when its running and see if it feels limited or not any at all. then also try and unbolt the exhaust before the cat and try like the other guy said

+++++++++ That is what i would suggest. Remove the O2 and install a preasure gauge. Rev it up and monitor the preasure. If its above 1 1/2 -2 lbs the cat is plugged. Dont think a cat that is bad spews sulfur dioxide (rotten egg smell). That is by no means a test for a cat. That tells you the sulphor content in your fuel is HIGH. Check that cat it may surprize you. Hay 93 GOOD CALL. Dick also pointed it out cats go bad in that exact way they plug and severely restrict exhaust flow. Then the motor wont rev past a certain point. TOM

im throwing this out there as a wild card because this kinda happened to me and i fixed it.

check your TV cable on the throttle body. i did this and i am not able to go over 3k with no problem. it just needed adjusting.
