I have a young apprentice that i call the LOOSE TORPEDO. He is a high school senior and works in the shop for extra credit. I gave him a simple job today. Please put the oil pan on a 2.3 turbo motor i just finished assembling. He replied YES SIR TOM. I love this kid. He retrieved the pan cleaned it and started to install it. I stopped him and asked if checked it out. He said 100%. Now i know the drain plugs on 2.3 early rail pans crack so i stopped him. He got MAD and insulted. I said one more time did you check that PAN. His reply was i already tried a drain plug in it????? I said bring the pan over to my work bench. With all the confitence in the world he did. Ok tom please put your blessing on this pan so i can finish he replied??? I said look real close at the threads??? He did not know what to say. So i said to him pull out another pan from the back room thats marked OK with my initials on it. He did and so goes the story. Here is the moral of this story. No matter how trivial a part is always check it very closely. Even if its NEW. Also never over tighten a pan drain plug on a 2.3 or for that matter any MOTOR. TOM RENZO

The pan is dirty when he brought it to my desk i blew of a part that i just blasted. And the beads went into the pan. He did have it clean before hand. I was just trying to point out something that can be overlooked by the best of us. When i assemble an engine its triple check everything. I posted it as a conversation piece actually. Thought you guys would enjoy it. One quick note a lot of the early ford pans had those OHM threads spot welded to the pans and they were really BAD. I will fix that pan and it will be perfect. I braze a fitting in it that wont strip any more. The early pans used to crack like this one. The pan is a 2.3 late turbo rail support pan.
