Default Help. have 2 problems; battery draining and leaking valve cover or seal

First my car wont start after it sits for a day or so. I put the charger on it and it starts right away. The voltage on the battery not running is 12.6 and with engine running is 14.5. What is the best way to trouble shoot this. According to the Haynes book the voltages check out ok. Whats the next step? Second I have an oil leak from either the valve cover or the cam seal. Its slinging oil on the underneath side of the hood. How easy is this too fix? Thanks again.

I would have the system checked. Advanced Auto Parts can do this system check for free. Voltages may be right but you also need amps. A battery can have 12.5 volts but only 200 amps. What size motor do you have? for the oil leak suggestions.

It would help if I read the title of the forum huh. The valve cover gasket should be fairly easy to do on the 2.3

First off do a load test on the battery, if the needle drops off rapidly then the battery is no good. Before you do the load test, make sure your battery is fully charged. If the load test checks out, and the battery is okay then take your ground cable off. Take a test light and clip it to the cable, then take the test light and touch the ground terminal on your battery if the test light lights up then you have a short somewhere. This part is time consuming because it's a process of elimination. Your going to have to repeat the process, for each fuse until you find where the draw is coming from then check to see what runs off that fuse. Sometimes it's the simplest thing, that you don't think of that's causing the problem, Mike. SCT Tuner. As for the valve cover gasket, it's an easy job to replace. But pressure wash your engine, so it's good and clean so you know for sure that's where your leak is coming from, Mike.

That is the only way it can be done. A cam seal is real easy to change and the valve cover is a piece of cake also. I also use a test light to check for battery drains. One tip though do not use an led test light use a conventional one with an incondesent lamp. Another words a regular bulb. The lamp should not glow when installed in series with either the ground or the positive cable. Been doing it this way since i was a kid. Hope this helps. TOM
