Default 2.3 Engine "burping" or "bleeding" cooling system How To Question

I have an 89 2.3L Mustang LX and need information on how to properly "burp" or "bleed" my cooling system.

I am doing this because I am not getting hot air from my heater after replacing my heater hoses, radiator hoses, radiator cap, thermostat (a few times) and my heater core.

I have tried bleeding the system a couple times by putting my car on ramps and removing my radiator cap with my car running. I also had my heater on the hottest setting and fan on HI. The temperature gauge will mark about halfway up after about 10-15 mins. but still no hot air. Then both times, once I turned the engine off, my radiator would violently overflow, most likely un-doing what I had done.

What am I doing wrong? Should I not have the fan on? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

With the car up on the ramps and the cap removed as it heats up pull your throttle cable or have a friend hold a steady 2500-3000 rpm. Heater needs to be on and the fan is not a problem to be on. The reving engine coupled with the open heater should drink as you fill. once the car will not accept more, put the cap on with the engine still holding 2500 or so. The system is now closed and pressurized so it won't boil over like it has been doing to you. See how that works and let us know.

That car does not have to be BLED. All you have to do is monitor the coolant and worm the engine till the stat opens. I always drill a couple of small holes in the rim of the stat to aleviate air bubbles in the engines. But the 2.3 really does not have to be burped to get the air out. Did the car overheat before the work??? Or did you just replace some components??? Fill the radiator warm the engine up tll the coolant drops then refill to make up the difference when the coolant drops.

Ok, I will try to do it again and replace the cap before I turn off the engine this time.

And, no the car has never overheated, the engine doesnt really seem to warm up durning normal driving according to my guage. I just noticed my upper hose was ballooning by the clamp and my lower was a little chaffed and replaced them. I also replaced my heater hoses when I did my heater core because they looked to be about 20 years old.

So I finished RE-bleeding the system and I got heat while it was warming up!!! LOL
I then replaced the cap at RPM and then turned off so I dont have another mess to clean up and hopefully won't have to bleed it again.

So hopefully I will continue to have heat when I drive... we'll see.

Thank you guys.

I know when I did the heater hoses on my carbed 86, it took a long, long time to get the air out of the system. All I did was fill the radiator, start the car, top off the radiator and overflow bottle, and then drive 60mph down the highway for about 10 minutes. Pulled over and refilled the overflow bottle. That's the quickest way I know of refilling my system.

Never had a problem with that when I owned the 2.3 Mustangs.
Now, with my 240SX.... (use the bleeder bolt.)

Glad you got it fixed.
And my new Turbo Coupe seems to be okay also after my fluid change.
