Default Ford 2.3l Dragging

Ok so here's the deal. Removed a 86 2.3 motor out of a ford ranger which ran just not well. Replaced it with a 2.3 out of an 88 mustang using all hardware out of mustang. (just dropped in and plugged up) Now the motor drags like a timing issue or battery problem.(didn't do it with the other motor) But I have verified timing several times over and check voltage so these are not my problem. Unless there is something different in the engines from ranger to mustang. Now part 2 the mustang engine was sitting for a year in my garage but it turns over fine by hand so I don't think its a cylinder problem But I don't know. At a loss here. pulling my hair out. So any help or direction would be great thanks.

+++++ Check all the grounds and make shure the cables are tight and wire brush where they connect to the block (ETC). I always make shure the negative battery goes to the block then a seperate ground from the frame to the block. Sounds like a bad ground. I also thought this was going to be a drag race story DAM.

if all grounds have been check next thing i would check, would be to remove the starter and have it checked then reinstall maing sure it is not cocked in an way to one side or the other, i may be installed to far in and catching there too.

i have seen both problems in the past on sand rails
