I have an 88 turbocoupe 2.3l turbo motor i put into my courier... im having tropuble with the timing, i set it to spec and it ides fine but under load or reving it retards back to 30 btc...it missfires, runs extremely rich, and has no power. it has new dist, tfi, ect in the upper plenum, vam, tps and some other stuff as for the rebuild. what else could cause the timing to retard this hard under just the crack of the throttle???
ive previously had this motor in but pulled for rebuild. reran my harness to clean it up a lil, and everything was done 1 at a time and no way to mess it up...i need some ideas and any input would be greatly appreciated!!

I will try. I assume the jumper plug that you remove to set timing is reinstalled. I asssume belt timing is good. You said new distributor. I was thinking rotor came loose from shaft I had this happen but being new I wouldn't think so. Timing was all over the place. Maurice
well as for the initial cam timing its perfect but i cant check for codes...i dont have a DLC in my harness. i was gonna splice in one but i cant find 1 that is the same color wires as the electrical diag shows and doesnt specify pin #, just colors so its tricky to wire in.
so its supposed to be 30*btdc with spout in? thats when it starts missfiring and gives my all the trouble. idleing its a lil rich but responds ok till that flat spot in the throttle just off were it jumps straight to 30* BTDC and i have some power around 1/2 throttle but thats it any more or less and it missfires or trys to fall on its face if i go WOT.

10 degree btdc with spout out. Just get any of the connectors for the check engine spliced in. All Ford from that era used those 2 connectors so finding one in j-yard should be simple. If not pm me I am sure I have some. 88 wiring diagram if needed. Maurice http://www.rothfam.com/svo/reference/88Thunderbird.pdf
The cam timing is a good thing to check but wont effect the ignition timing. With that said is the initial timing 10* BTDC with spout out???. If so when the spout is installed what is the TIMING??? It should advsnce to app 28 +or- a fiew degreese. If it does this you may have another problem not related to timing??? Run codes and install a place to connect a scan tool. That is a must any way for future service. With that said we will wait for codes and exact timing readings. Peace Tom

ok ill see what i can do about the DLC.
cam timing is perfect, timing without spout is about 10*, and with it back in its prob about 15-20* and just off idle it backs off to 30* or more BTDC.
ill double check some things tonight though. thanks guys

alrightguys i totally got it figured out!!Maurice thanks for the ford wiring diag. it was different from haynes and mitchell....mitchel and haynes both said i have 2 sig returns pins in my pcm, so i split off some of my wires evenly though both to not overload 1 pin. for says 1 pin was a sign ret. and the other was a nuetral switch for the man trans so basically i had a bunch of sensors without a signal return curcuit hahaha. got it rewired and all cleaned up runs and drives like a champ. thanks all u guys for ur help and input.
