Every 2 to 3 times I start the car, the starter won't disengage. I can rap on the solenoid a few times and it will release. In the last 4 years I have put 6 solenoids on it, counting the one I just put on it today. It started fine the first time but the 2nd time it stuck. Does anyone know what could be causing it to do this. Its a real pain in the butt to unbuckle, get out, pull the hood pins and raise the hood every other time I start the car. Please help!
Yes I do. I went thru a few autoparts one's and every burn't up a starter before I could get it to stop. Stop by a j-yard or Ford dealership and by a Ford one. That is what stopped mine. I put a used Ford one in and now problem in a long time. I have a new one in the trunk that is there just in case. Now a days I trust the used parts more than the new one's.
On a side note I put in 4 "lifetime" warrant alternators. I put a used 3G in it and solved that problem. Maurice
Their is only one fix i know that works permanently. ditch the crappy fender unit and antiquated starter for one of these. This will end all the BS with the crappy solenoids on the market today. Not to mention saving your car from a melt down as Maurice pointed out with a stuck solenoid. peace Tom
very good idea to use the style of starter tom suggested not only is it more reliable it is also much smaller and lighter compared to the original equip. however i had the same issue with my truck and a ford solenoid fixed the issue

Info. Is the fender mounted starter relay needed with a mini-starter? - Four Eyed Forums
I think can confirm with autoparts places the later 2.3 8 plug engines have the mini starter. It is on my list to do when I find one in j-yard. Too cheap to buy new or rebuilt because of reasons already mention. I use to have a good link of conversion of 2.3 specific but lost all info when computer was hyjacked. Maurice
