Ok so I am about to start my rebuild. Engine is almost ready to go in and is set up as so.
84 block from a thunderbird
90's intakes (square style)
T3 turbo
35lb injectors
Large Vam,
88 ecu LA3
T5 tranny.
So the question is do I need a 88 harness or can I mod my 84 harness. If so how?
I would not use a 88 turbocoupe wiring. It has almost all the front end of car wiring in it you would have to remove. I would use a 87-90 Mustang 2.3 non turbo wiring harness and repin it for the vam. Then all would be need to wiring power etc to the connection.
Is your 84 a turbo car already?
I have not seen a 84 harness so can't say. I would say could. I took a 93 Mustang and redone that harness to run a 94 Taurus SHO motor. So I can't see why you can't.
This is the 88 wiring diagram. http://www.rothfam.com/svo/reference/88Thunderbird.pdf
Some info here may help. Maurice
I have an 84 T-Bird Turbo Coupe which is a donor. Going into a 86 2.3 N/A.
I have a guy sending me an 88 harness off ebay, cost me 85 dollars.
So I should try and get a non turbo harness and re pin it?
I had rusted out 86 and considered doing the turbo swap on it instead of the car I have. On the 86 you can pull the engine harness. [Going from memory] it is a standalone harness. Then take the wiring from the 88 harness and graft in the 86 harness. That is way I did the 93 SHO project. I mounted harness on a plywood. [green tape has writing on it of what that connection or wire goes to.] http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w...e/100_6568.jpg
Second way is do get a later 87-90 non turbo harness and convert to turbo [Per Stinger site and others] and that leaves the plug at the computer to deal with. I guess depends on how good doing wiring. Maurice
I am an electronics engineer, so the wiring is a pinch. Just after the easiest way. Striping cables off an 88 seems easier than adding to an re pinning a 87-90. Unless there is more too it?
Repinning the 87-90 Is just 4 wires anding the premium gas wires. Now the advantage of the 84 Harness [I assume year of car] is the connection to the car will be correct. Of course since wiring should be easy. Just strip the 88 harness for what you need repin in the 84 harness, add vam and computer. How to repin is in this video I made. Real simple. 100_0204.mp4 Video by mgman75 | Photobucket
Unless it is a turbo car with efi. You will need to add injector harness and several other items and the vam. Don't forget if not efi turbo car need to add pump, pump relay and inertia switch plus mod tank for pump [or use external pump] and add return fuel line. Maurice
