Thumbs up Resolution of Idle Problem

The following is a problem I had with my 93 wanting to drop to 500 rpms and die while driving or parked. The ICM was showing as bad on the diagnostics that the shop ran, but 3 months later, the same problem was occurin again. This time, the code was still the same, but they said one or both of the coil packs could be causing the ICM to go bad. I replaced both coil packs and ICM and it has been fine now for 4 days. Parts were only $337.00 . Will be finding out tomorrow what the shop bill is, I'm afraid I don't want to know. Anyways, If your ICM goes bad, it might not be a bad deal to spend another $120 to replace coil packs too. My pony has 80,600 on it now and this has been the most expensive engine repair yet. I hope this post helps someone else when their pony wants to just die when rpms' drop.

OUCH! Thanks for the help for those who could use it. I don't want to make ya feel bad but those two parts run less than $100 bill at the parts stores. I can understand that not everyone is mechanically\electrically inclined unfortunately, and have no choice but to rely on the shop pros.
But for future reference, that ICM is a tricky part and likes to go out easily.
May be a good idea to price one and make sure you can get one cheap just in case this should happen again.

Question

You say that most parts stores have the parts for $100. I checked several stores in my town (Napa, Carquest, Autozone, Federated, O'Reilly's, Advance) and all the prices were within $5 of each other. I paid $189 for the ICM and $60 each for the 2 coil packs. Then another $3 for the dielectric grease for the plug wires. I only spent $72 for the diagnostics at my regular mechanic, which I thought was not too bad. I personally replaced them on the car which took me about 30 minutes for all 3 parts. The grand total of parts, supplies, and diagnostics was $400. What parts stores did you find all 3 parts for $100? Let me know and I'll call or check online to verify the price you have stated.

My original ICM was good for 80,000 miles and over 12 yrs. It may not have gone out if it wasn't for the bad coil pack.

All the parts tested good at the auto parts places, but amazingly when I replaced the parts she runs 110% better.

Were you referring to me as not electrically/mechanically inclined? If so, I am not sure why you think that I am not mechanically or electrically inclined. I had a check engine code, I took it to the shop to have the code checked before buying parts and throwing them in. Even the shop was just guessing that the coil packs were bad since it was such an intermittent situation. Not trying to prove myself to anyone, just trying to help out anyone else that may ever have this type of problem.

Red face I Stand corrected!!

I just looked up the ICM and now see why you have quoted what you have.
I was not aware that the 93 was different than 89. Teach me to do my research from now on!

Good that you posted that, as many like myself sometimes have to refer to these for help on occasion. You mentioned you had to take it to a shop, not questioning knowledge or capability, it just kind of indicated the work was done by someone else. With that said, I did locate the webpage from the same place I shopped. Not sure if zip code could be an issue with cost.

This site should have the other parts as well.

I was also curious, where did you find that alternator you have listed?
My stang is in need of some serious amperage due to my accesories.

The alternator I have is the one used for 92 Ford Econoline vans. I have the 95 amp, but they also had one that year that was 130. The case is an exact match. Mine is a Westling remanufactured one, if you really need the part # from Westling I could dig that up, otherwise just go to your local parts store and request one for the van or truck. You wil have to make some wiring changes, but they are minimal. There are lots of posts on the 3g upgrade on the net.

Ford Econoline? Cool! That sure would beat buying that alternator upgrade I have seen on a website for $300, this was a 200 amp though. Thanks for the info I will have to check that out. I will look up that 200 amp alternator just in case you are interested, it has been while since I have last seen it.

My solution is a Escort IAC. I tried several used 2.3 could not find a good one. Seen this on junk motor so check ohm value and install no problems since. Here is picture it is on a 5.0 body but will fit the 2.3 throttle body.
