I just changed my cam in my 88 mustang lx 2.3L and was wondering if the cam shaft and the crank have to be perfectly lined up ?when i put the cam so the notch on it lines up with the mark and put the crank to top dead, when i tighten up the timeing belt tensioner the crank moves just a bit which makes the cam right on the mark but the crank is a little before or a little after top dead center,i can never get just perfect should it matter ?

Mine did the same thing but then I noticed that I didn't have all the slop out of the right side of the belt. The teeth on the belt looked to be falling into place everywhere but in fact were sittting on top of some of the crank teeth.
