Default solenoid/starter problem?

Ok i picked up a 86' SVO about a month ago. It was really a steal for 800 dollars because the guy said he thought the timin belt came off, and i got the car to my house and put a new battery in it and it started right up. It needs a few interior parts and a good paint job. Anyhow, I have been driving it around the house every now and then and everything was working good til yesterday when i went to crank it again after i had parked it and the solenoid would just click. I went and got a new solenoid because i could smell something burning and then when i put the new one on, it started smoking and the wire from the battery and the one goin to the starter were really hot. ANY IDEAS?!

Bad starter - or the starter is being overloaded, as might happen if the engine was locked up. (lets hope not.)

Well I guess its the starter then. I have driven the car around and done a compression test it was 140,145,140,150 so i guess its in pretty good shape.
