i have an 89 mustang lx and the engine needed work. i put in a new radiator and hoeses, changed the valve cover gasket did a tune up/ basic maintainece.

i also sparyed the engine down with water but covered all openings.

i tired to start it after all was said done and put back together and all i was getting was a brust of rich gas out the exhuast like the fuel and air mix wasnt burining right or it wasnt igniting right the only thing i didnt do was change the wires for the spark plugs

it was sitting for two years too but started roughly that day but didnt idle n things like that "but it started"

After the cap and rotor, gently dry the plug wires. Water on cracked wires also causes problems.

If it might be the plug wires, you can diagnose it if you've got a shaded area where you can open the hood.

Warm it up to full operating temp. Spray a light mist of water on the plug wires. If the wires are at fault, you might see sparks jumping to the valve cover, or some other grounded metal.

If you do see sparks, my advice is do NOT touch the wire with the engine running. Guess how I know that's a bad idea.
