Default engine noise, Erratic idoling, smells

hey i just replace my engine (2.3 n/a)a little while ago with one i got from a junk yard. Its a 89, a two year upgrade from my 87. I had to use the old upperintake cause the new one's had a problem with the housing for the throttle cable.

problem is i got a high pitched whistle when I accerate kinda hard, that dissapears when i floor it.

for a while it would barely run, stuggling like i had it in a heavy gear when I would take off, almost like theres no fuel. I cleaned the plugs off and replaced the number 4 spark and that part of the problem is about gone cept for a small lag at the 2300 to 2650 rpm mark. also it stuggles to idol when first turned on, it bounces itself till it stalls(rpms go from under 500 to over 1500 etc.), then when i start it again, or rev it to keep it from stalling, its fine.

I also got serous gas smell inside the car when i first turn it on and exhaust when ever i sit in one place (probably the near non-exsisant exhaust)

She never heats up, stays on 130 most of the time. Once shes warm she runs fine.

Any words of wisdom?

Sounds like a vacuum leak could be a major player. WOT provides the least amount of vacuum so that would explain the lack of sound there. I would also check the air bypass valve (I dont know where it is on a 2.3) that could cause your idle problems before its warm.
As for the gas smell, I dont have any ideas right now.
