Default O2 Sensor or more??

Hi,
Bought an 89 hatch, 2.3EFI N/A LX, automatic. Found a LOT of things wrong with it, corrected them and it has helped, but still is not right.
Here's where I am now, car starts great and idles fine until it gets warm and rev it up, when it comes back down it will lope from 600-1100rpm looking for idle. Sometimes it finds it, sometimes it stalls. While driving now it runs fantastic about 50% of the time, the other 50% it sputters bad and hesitates under acceleration and has no power. It runs great or bad, no inbetween, like filpping a switch on and off. When its running bad it seems to be way rich, can smell the gas. Only code I get noe is 41 (too lean) I disconnected the 02 sens and ran great for a 30-40 mins while driving but returned to the same intermittent problem. I will replace the 02 sensor tomorrow but I get the feeling it will help but not fix it.
The other thing I can't figure out is that I have to set the base timing to about 32 degrees for it to run good. I've checked the cam timing and already pulled the distributor and set #1 to TDC, it was more than that before I pulled the dist. Found a paint mark on the cover at about 32deg. from a previous owner, I guess thats where it runs good but I can't see why (it is much better set there)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, it has about wore me out.
Thanks

PS: Already cut off the cat. and it has much more power now when it runs good

Everything except the timing problem sounds like what can happen if the MAP sensor is unplugged from its vacuum line or has a vacuum leak, inlcuding the lean code.

Default Somthing similar

I had a similar problem, check to see if your batt fluctuates as well. I had a few apparently bad connections (electrical). Check the plug wires and such as well.

Id just gotten mad one day and unplugged everything near the battery, cleaned it all with degreaser, and accidentally broke the starter solenoid. REplaced that and pluged it all back...Runs decent now.

Thanks so much guys. The map sensor has good vacuum, but was wondering if it might be bad. Is there any way to check it?
It did have some wiring issues that was affecting it, fixed them a while ago but I will look for some more though.
