my fuel gauge on my 88 mustang is not working, the needle is up past the full mark and it stays there even when empty. What could be the problem? can enyone give me any info on this problem....thanx
You could have a bad gauge, sending unit, or a wiring issue. I replaced the sending unit and wiring harness in my '87 Mustang GT and it still didn't work right (it read what it wanted when it wanted, I just gassed up every 100 miles of city driving and every 200 of highway so I never ran out.) My '88 LX's gauge alway read way past full the whole time I owned it, I tried a working sending unit from another car and that didn't fix it, but I didn't investigate further since it could go nearly twice as far on the same amount of gas as the '87 GT did.

Also have a 2003 Dodge Ram (lightly modded daily driver/tow rig/office/dining room/home away from home/workshop... I call it "The Big Blue Dawg".)
My gauge works some of the time. Usually it sits way over full, but over time it will sink to the the correct fuel level, stop for a minute, and rise back up. Occasionally it works perfectly-but that is not typical.
Does anyone have an idea about how to fix that? where might the problem be? Could the fact that my warning lights (lower right of dash) dont work effect the fuel gauge?????

Ford discontinued them so you'll have to hit the yards. Grab a couple. They're the same on most Fox bodied Mustangs. You have to pull the pod to get to 'em but it's not too hard a job.

The photo is of the back of the instrument cluster removed from the car. It's only a couple of screws, disconnect a couple of connectors and possibly lower the steering column a bit. Take the cluster out, flip it around and remove the anti-slosh module (white arrow) held on by 1 screw. Replace with a junkyard unit. Plug the connectors you removed back in, turn on the key and see if your gas gauge works. Do this before you completely reinstall the cluster. That's why I said 'grab a couple of modules from the 'yard'. If one doesn't work, slap in another until you find a good one. That's about all you can do, seeing as Ford discontinued them!

I spent 300$ to get that damn thing fixed and it still doesn't work right!
When I bought my '90 lx, the fuel gauge did not work at all. After replacing the fuel pump and the sending unit (separately because they are two separate units), it still did not work right.
When I fill up, it goes to 100%
When the tank is at 50%, the needle is at 25%
When the tank is empty, the needle is at 15%
When I fill up again, the needle slowly goes back to 100%, but lingers at 80% for a while
I'm not sure why. Like I said, I spent 300$ on that piece, (plus more for the fuel pump because it was whining)
Wow, seems most of the people having problem with their guage including myself. Excactly same as most of you my 89 goes over the full even when its empty so when i fill it up, i'll reset the tachometer and around 300 km i'll fillt it again, dont want to spend money on that, insteded i'll save my $ for some other parts
i have the same problem sometimes my guage works after i put gas in it for a min..when i bought the car it stayed above full but has slowly started working when it wants...

I'll have to try out the module thing and see if that helps me. Mine stays past full and sometimes when I am getting towards the 260 mile mark or so on a tank it will work but I always try to fill up every 220 or so I don't see it work often. I hope this works because I was thinking it might be my sending unit which goes for $90. For that price and as long as my odometer works I'll just fill up every 220.
One other question I have which seems to be somewhat common from talking to people but I don't know the answer for is my speedo. Bounces around like a kid on Christmas morning. Most likely the cable? Are there speed sensors on these cars? Every once and a while it will level off but has to be off by at least 20 mph or so when it does but alot of the time it just bounces off of the trip reset button back and forth.
I'm having the same problem as GhostSix on my 87 2.3L LX
The needle remains just past full at all times
The gas tank is fine, so it must be a wiring problem, right?
