Question removing 2.3L air intake silencer

That black tube that runs between the airbox and the throttle body...pull it off. When you look inside of it, you'll see a plastic insert on both sides. Grab a flathead screw driver and pry these out.

well, there was no such apparatus in there so i guess either the 93's dont have them or the guy who had the car before me already pulled them out.....i guess that explains why i had such a hard time figuring out what everyone was talking about in the first place thanks anyway nic

I'll take one this weekend. but, until then, find the air filter box, follow it through the mass air flow sensor (aluminum round thingie attached directly to air box with a plug going into a little box on the top. from there, you see a small expandable rubber tube going to a big plastic piece that is about 1 1/2" bigger than the rubber hose diameter. That is the air silencer that everyone is talking about gutting. Let me know if that helps you find it.

I noticed that even though the hoses between the air filter and throttle body are 3 inches in diameter, the inside of the air silencer chokes it down to about 1 inch. I replaced mine over the weekend with a 14 inch long piece of 3 inch diameter PVC pipe, with a 45 degree elbow. The car runs so much better, accelerates better, and I have no trouble merging into traffic on the interstate now. I recommend removing that air silencer to anyone!

The PVC conversion is the easiest. That silencer really chokes of the air and removing it helps the engine breath. Next thing to do is half shaft the TB and really get some air going in there.
