Default Offenhouser 4 bbl experience?

Does anyone have experience with the Offenhouser 4 bbl intakes for a 2.3? Are they worth the effort? Found one used so just wondering. The car is a 1980 Mustang thats a california car. I figured I could just swap intakes every 2 years for smog. The car is also getting a Ranger roller cam.
Thanks
Tracy

I haven't used one but am planing on carburating my 89. I wasn't sure whether to go 4 barell or 2. But if I found one of those intakes I would snap it up since they are no longer made. BUY IT! Even if you don't end up using it. Somebody would buy it from you if you didn't use it.

I read an old HOT ROD MAGAZINE article that I may have found the link to off of this site from one of the old threads. Do a search for it. Anyways they made some good power from the 4 barel and header, cam etc. I say go for it! Something different would be very cool. They used a holley 390cfm carb. You can still get those. Summit has them for around 330.00. Best part is you could add a nitrouse kit for a 4 barrel super easy.

If you get it and don't want it let me know in the next month or two, I may just buy it. I'm trying to figure out how to allow messages from other members right now. If anybody knows how please post that info bellow also. In the meantime my e-mail is.... stangstangsstang@msn.com

I ran one of those on my dirt car, with a 600 cfm and it was FAST until i was protested. with the right parts to go with it i think it would be a good intake. The best intake i have used was the bottom half of the fi and get the adapter for 2brl the adapter is about 75.00 they are awsome.

Hey OKOUTLAW, so you've used the fi bottom with the adaptor? That's my plan. Did you port the fi lower at all? What carb did you run? You're the only person I've run into that may have done this before so any parts advice or suggestions would be great.

Hope you see this...
Thanks a lot.

Several years [12] back we built a NA 2.3 for our Courrier.
Smoothed out the cumbustion chambers and ports, Added a middle performance cam, SVO anti pump lifters, Isky valve springs, Offy dual port 4 bbl intake, 390 Holley 4 bbl, pacesetter hedder w/36"long 2.5dia glasspack and upgraded the ignition.
Never on dyno but it put away every Datson Z we encountered.
The little stinker was pretty quick and merging into freeway traffic was fun as after you setteled in at better than a quick shot to 70 there was 2 more gears to go.
All that fun and it still got a steady 25mpg.
This little singer would show you the high side of 7500rpm anytime you nailed it.
I have heard since that time that the FI lower was the best flowing intake that you can find and that it out performed the Offy.
It was fun trying something different.
If I was to do it today I'd go turbo.

Update;

Got her rolling again....what a big difference!!! Opened up the airfilter housing to allow more air too. Its more fun to drive now. Kind of fun having a daily driver beater that you can thrash on, not really care, and it keeps going!! Too cheap to try new intake, though I think I'll machine up a 1" 2 bbl spacer and see if that doesnt help.
Thanks for your help
Tracy

I'm running a ranger roller cam, with one of these intakes along with a 2 1/4 inch exhaust with a race muffler and no cat converter on my 78 Mustang II. I used an adapter to keep the stock carb. before the cam and intake, my car only made real power between 3500 - 5000 rpm. Now it seems to make the same power throughout the rpm range with peak power appearing to be in the 2500 - 4000 range. I'm sure a true 4bbl carb setup would work much better, but until I have the money, this is how she'll stay.

How did you put such a large carb on the intake? I'm planning on using the 4bl intake and I went to the local mustang graveyard and I was told 79 mustangs came with a header much like some of the sn-95's did. I plan on giving it dual exhaust, where the exhaust pipe uses the cat to crossover to the driver side I'm gonna replace it with a Y pipe or t pipe and then use either a glas pack on each side or a muffler and glasspack on each side.
