got a 92 2.3l convertible. a couple of weeks ago, i changed the plugs and wires and it started to hesitate and lack power real bad. instead of doing it the smart way (1 wire at a time), i did them all at once and used the diagram that is in my haynes book for the 92 2.3. that's when it started to run bad. so for shits and giggles, i switched it to the 93 because the coils didn't look like they were as offset as the 92 diagram. it ran better at idle, but still hesitated and lacked power when driving. i've spent the last 3 hours playing around with the configuration and here is what seems to work best, but it still hesitates a bit (especially with the a/c on). also, the a/c never gets cold. it did before changing the plugs and wires. it has the 2 coils where the wires attach:
2 3
4 1
4 3
1 2
-----------------front of engine (belts located at front of engine right?)-------------
here is what the haynes book says is the configuration for the 92- (tried to show the offset of the coils as in the book:
2 4
3 1
4 3
1 2
---------------- front of engine-------------------
and what the haynes book says is the configuration for the 93+
3 1
2 4
4 3
1 2
---------------front of engine-----------------------
yeah. i put it back to that and it's running better. i think i had switched the 2 and 3 on the exhaust coil.
after doing that, i checked the spark on each of the coil posts and all were sparking, but the post for cyl#1 was sparking really bad compared to the others. bought a new coil pack for the exhaust plugs and will swap it out today.
i also pulled codes on it and got 223 in the Key on Engine Off test. Which was something like "loss of Dual Plug Inhibitor (DPI)" or something like that. after reading up on it, it seems like that indicates the ICM is bad as well. trying to scrounge up the $130 bucks to replace that too. i'm between jobs for now. =)
also, something that i saw while reading up on code 223, was that people were having problems with their tachs bouncing around while getting this code. mine doesn't bounce around, but jumps from 0 to 4k when i start the engine and never really moves much after that. i'm hoping that the ICM change will fix that as well, since it seemed to fix the other folks having the same problem. =)
oh, and hoping that changing the coil packs and ICM will fix my 13mpg problem. anyone have an idea what a 92 2.3L should be getting with regards to MPG?
i did. the only plug that wasn't sparking as strongly as the others was cyl#1 on the exhaust side. replaced that 1 wire and it still wasn't sparking as strongly. that's why i bought the coil pack.
do you think it might be the ICM instead of the coil pack?
