Default problem getting the hub off the crank shaft

i was able to get the crank pully off which has 4 bolts.but can not get the center bolt loose to get the hub off so i can get the belt guard off to put on new timing belt.also any tricks on to keeping the crank from turning when trying to spin this bolt off?? any help will be greatly appreciated. oh by the way this is a 1993 2.3 with 56,000 miles

If you have room, use an impact wrench, it uses vibration to loosen the bolt and usually won't turn the crank unless that bolt is just really tight. If that's the case, use a strap wrench around the hub.

If you decide to use the strap wrench. But the pulley back on. It'll give the wrench a nice round surface to bite on.

If you've got a manual trans car, throw the trans in 5th and yank the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

If you dont have an impact wrench or a strap wrench, remove a spark plug and start inserting a rope which will fit through the spark plug hole. Enough to fill the combustion chamber. When you start to loosen the bolt, the engine will start to turn over until the rope gets compressed enough to stop the rotation. After installation, just pull the rope out and install plug.......wala!

the timing belt is done ppl!! cudnt break the bolt.so i went around it.i bent the belt guide back.then installed the belt.then tapped the guide back and done!!!
