Both coils in both coil packs fire on the power stroke. Each coil pack has two coils which are connected to two spark plugs each. this arrangement makes possible the firing of two plugs with each coil. The plug which fires on the exhaust stroke does nothing but complete the electrical circuit to ground for the associated plug on the power stroke.
I haven't found, in any literature I've seen, the reason for the dual plug setup, but my guess is that it's to get a more complete burn while the piston is at near maxium compression. That would logically provide a boost in power.
The engine will run on either coil pack with the other disconnected, but seems to me to have a slight loss of power. Also the tach will be inoperative with either pack disconnected. |
