Default what tool should I use to get my followers out?

I am disasembling my engine. How do I compress the valve spring to release the follower? My valve spring compressor is one that you "twist" the top and th jaws compress the spring. Won't fit. My haynes manual shows a tool that is a type of lever that is used to pry the spring down using the cam as the fulcrum I belive. Can I get this tool anywhere? I could probably get a "C" shaped type of compressor, but I'd like to be able to use something in the future that cam be used with the head on the engine.

Do you know any tricks or tools. Maybe I'm just overlooking something that would work.

Any Ideas Are Apreciated!

Most auto parts stores sell the lever style one for OHV engines, which will work, but it's tricky to do. I modified mine a bit by opening the end a little wider if I remember right, been awhile since the last time I did it.

Maybe 20PSI, new computer, new 3" VAM, and some porting will make it faster

Yeah, I tried the autoparts stores and they don't have it. I thought about making one like sleeper pointed out. I'd rather have a tool made for this, but I suppose I could work something up. Sleeper, did you use that design that you posted?

Is there a place I can order the real deal from?

Thanks guys

I never used that tool, I had a different one that takes the followers out of a Chrysler V6 head. I would tell you not to use it though. I almost broke my finger because it slipped out

Ok, so I ended up buying a 3 dollar prybar from Harbor Freight and cutting the end into a long fork. Then I welded on a stack of steel pieces to the underside of the tip of each fork. Took a lot of cutting and grinding. But it works, not realy well, but it get's the job done. I will continue to modify it so it works better. Sleeper, that disign you posted looks like it would have worked well.

Next question is this: Now that I have the followers out how do I get those metal retainer deals that go around the valve spring off. They are actualy more of a c shape and about .75" - 1" tall. I need them off to compress the spring and then get the valve out. OR are you supposed to use one of those c shaped spring compressors and take the valve out and then the spring and that c shaped metal dealy I was talking about?

By the way... is this piece I speek of to retain spring geometry or control oil in that area? Just curious.

Thanks a million
