It's not so much a T-5 thing as it is bellhousing design. There was a 2.3 bellhousing that had the direct pull cable arrangement. It was behind the 4spd in '79 and '80 Turbo Mustangs. Fast forward to the introduction of the T-5 in the 2.3 Mustang and you get what you recently dealt with. A 60" cable that pulls one end of a bellcrank that in turn pulls a 2" cable that actuates the clutch fork. It's tiring just to explain it.

Whereas the V8 cars, and earlier 4cyl cars had a cable that went to the clutch fork. Simple, effective, and less moving parts.
Even the 87 and 88 T-Bird Turbo Coupes got a hydraulic clutch. Why they kept that ridiculous cable arrangement is beyond me.
