Question 2.3 consternation

I have an '89 2.3 hatchback, and have been looking for more power too. Sadly, I don't have the money to turbocharge my car (it's an LX). BUT, I have been investigationg supercharging systems, only all I manage to find is a system for 5.0...

Here's my basic situation, for those interested:

light blue '89 hatchback, 2.3L EFI,
I had an unfortunate incident at high speeds with a T-intersection that wasn't marked at all, and a cornfield.
my oilpan got poked, but it only leaked when I drove so I didn't notice any drippage and the oil usage seemed normal for a while.
until, of course, the engine started to rattle and shake and went poof.

so now, I am tearing it down to replace the rods, and decided to replace the internal bits while I'm in there.

I also want to add more thru a bolt-on, but turbos are too expensive and too time-consuming for me, not being a consumate mechanic.

I have looked and it seems like a centrifugal or a Jackson supercharger would work,
but the Vortech kit is for 5.0 and jackson only deals with a focus 2.0

so if anyone has a suggestion, or a name of someone who can supercharge my lil' poonstang, I would be much obliged, as I'm sure would the Mustangman. peace out, and remember, rice is good with soy sauce and mongolian beef, not cars.

I've also heard of guys going with up to 100hp of Nitrous in their 2.3 cars, but they all had really beefed them up...

You don't need to go turbo to make your car fast.

We blew a rod/piston on my brother's 4 and decided to build it up.

Went to the 5.7 inch rod KB piston conversion. The pistons were $122 from Summit at the time. Also put in file fit rings. Rods cost me $50 Canadian (about $5 US lol) and were considerably lighter than the stock four cylinder rods even though they were 1/2" longer. ARP waveloc rod bolts were installed as well. I also got the 89 grm tool steel pins. Lightened the rotating assembly by 2 pounds when everything was totalled up.

I bought a windage tray from Esslinger and installed that during the build up.

I heavily ported the heads and relocated the exhaust upwards. Manley 1.89/1.59 valves were installed along with a Ranger roller cam and followers. I also got a Ranger header and ceramic/aluminum coated it. Rest of the exhaust was 2.25 out the back with a Flowtech Terminator muffler.

The Intakes were ported and polished and port matched to the head. All internally projected fittings were cut down even with the intake wall. The TB was half shafted to increase flow. My own phenolic spacers were also installed during the buildup. It also has a rail mount gauge and Kirhban regulator.

For the timing, we got the round tooth gear set from Race engineering in Florida. Very light and adjustable. I also bought a %50 underdrive crank pulley from Unorthodox Racing and swiss cheesed the factory pulleys to lighten them.

I also bought a rice rocket CAI that came with a K&N filter which will be modified to take air directly from outside.

Other goodies include MSD 8.8 Wires and Coil, distributor cap and rotor, Turbo aluminum valve cover and Bosch +4 plugs.
Once the engine was running and the timing was set with no detonation, I disconnected the knock sensor. Those things kill the performance of the 2.3.

The last thing it needs, besides finishing the cold air box, is a newer mass air conversion. That alone is worth 17 hp on a stock 2.3. I also have some idiot making an aluminum drive shaft for it but he has been working on it for over a year (always too damn busy).

As it sits, this thing is fast. Fast enough to turn a lot of ricer laughter into gaping mouths at the next set of lights.

Default power adders

if you really want power from your 2.3 throw in a factory turbo 2.3 from a turbo coupe some are upwards of 700hp and to who ever posted all turboed 2.3 motors are 200hp wrong only the intercooled versions are close from the factory 190hp is their rating anything that is nonintercooled is 160 or less.by the way 2.3 turbo motors are all ready beefed up the will handle 400 to 700 hp just fine with a very small amount of maching.and yes u can add a nitrius system or propane injection system to increase power any 5.0 system will work fine as long as you remember that you have half the motor therefore you need to only inject half the flow for the hp level shot for the 5.0check this site use the search or look in any part of the forum it rocks hard and will teach you all alot.turboford.org
