there is one O2 sensor on my 1991 2.3L VIN M engine. it is screwed into the exhaust manifold, just in front of the flange that the exhaust system bolts onto. it is difficult to see when you are under the hood on the passenger side looking down. you might be able to see the wires that run into it. you will probably need heat from a torch to get it off. it took my mechanic 15 or 20 minutes to get it off with the car on the hoist after the the exhaust system (resonator and catalytic converter) had been removed. i would not try to take one off myself.

my mileage increased from 27 mpg to 29 mpg with the new sensor. i add injector/fuel line cleaner to every other tank of gas and run a can of heavy duty injector cleaner through the tank every 4 to 5000 miles. i think this helps to maintain an economical smooth running responsive engine.

Default number of O2 sensors

V6's and V8's have 2 banks of cylinders, resulting in at least two O2 sensors, at least one for each bank. On newer cars there is an O2 sensor upstream of the catalytic converter and one downstream of the catalytic convertor to determine if the cat. conv. is doing its job. This means there could be 4 O2 sensors on some V8 engines (I believe this is rhe case with newer V8 equipped Mustangs but I'm not absolutely certain.). When buying a newer used car - V6 or V8 - one should look to the condition of the the exhaust system and the O2 sensors before deciding on a price.

My 4 cyl Vin M may not have the power and torque that the youngsters lust after but it is a pleasure to go "motoring" in and is inexpensive to run and maintain.

theres alot of things that can be causing low gas milage,

Air Filter
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve
EGR Valve
Differential Fluid low
O2 Sensor
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Coil or Distributer Problem
Cylinder Comprestion Problem
Mass Air Flow Sensor
Throttle Position Sensor
Intake or Exhast gasket leak (sometimes causes an O2 Sensor error)
Flange gasket leak (sometimes causes an O2 Sensor error)
Cloged injectors
Vacuume leak
Tires not at proper PSI (or worn)
Wheel alignment off
Bad Struts or strut mounts
Bad Breaks
+ alot more (just the ones off the top of my head)

but I hear ya im getting about 10-13mpg and it sucks really bad
I'm having problems finding a flange gasket (autozone says my car doesnt have one lol, i point it out to them and there like well idk)

Hi,
I am new here and also have a 4 cyl 1991 Mustsng stock - after the electric radiator fan died I put a new one on - then when it still refusded to work checked all fuses and put on a temp sensing unit.
Now i put the box on the shock tower on [ used but testing good ] - still not working - the only thing to make it work so far is direct wiring - if this is it - then i wasted a lot of money on the fan set up- it can be wired stock again so if you or someone can advise me - super - thanks and good forum
