The 4.0L Explorer/Ranger/Aerostar V6 is based on the old German 2.8L V6 that was used in Capris, Couriers, Pintos, Bobcats, Bronco IIs, Mustang IIs, Rangers, and 1979 fox-body MUSTANGS!!!
If you can find a set of '79 fox-body Mustang motor mounts and a 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, or 4.0 bellhousing, you should be just about there, (other than grabbing computer and engine wiring harness from donor truck) but you're covering uncharted territory overall.
The better 4.0 to get would be a later 4.0L SOHC engine from a later Explorer, Ranger, or 2005+ MUSTANG! (that's right, the "new" V6 for the new Mustang is loosely based on the same V6 that first appeared in the 1974 Mustang II!) Be more pricey, but the power and torque are worlds better than the old OHV 4.0 (my sister had one of the OHV 4.0s in a '92 Explorer, even with a 3.55 trac-loc rear end the thing did 0-to-60 in 2-3 weeks!!!)
