Default Loose steering wheel. 1988 Mustang

Need some help.

When I picked up the 88 convertible 4cyl a couple of years ago it came with a loose steering wheel. Not loose steering.

If I grab the steering wheel there is at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch play side to side and top to bottom, not in and out.

I suppose somewhere back through time a PO had the steering wheel off and it may not have been replace properly? Or is there some type of bushings that may have worn out?

Any thoughts?

On that year model, there's only 1 bolt behind the horn button holding the wheel to the shaft. It could just be loose, or it could be stripped. You'll have to find out which it is if it's the actual wheel.
Or is it the wheel and the short segment of the column too that moves? If the immediate area behind the wheel moves too, this is common and you take the 2 piece column cover off and you'll be able to see where the 1 bolt is that holds that on and it'll be on the left side of the column. A 13mm is the bolt. Hope this helps.
