Default 1989 mustang catalytic converter, cherry red, what does this mean?

What does it mean if the cat is cherry red. Is it clogged or what.

Hi, No that means that you are dumping raw fuel into the exhaust system. (running to rich) A lot of people seam to think that when a converter glows red hot that it is clogged. But stop and think about it, A converters job is to get hot and burn up hydrocarbons, But when to much raw fuel is introduced to the converter it burns that too. When a converter is clogged you will have blow by and the rpm,s will be limited.

I agree, it sounds like it's running rich to me. It could be running lean but I'm leaning to the rich side. I've seen cars with the headers glowing cherry red and they were rich.

The rpms are very limited, i just got done replacing the distributer pickup because it was broken in half. And put on a timing belt. the timing is way off and i have to floor it to get up to a max of 10mph, so that could be the problem.

I think you answered your question. Cam timing sounds significantly retarded, allowing unburned fuel to escape to the exhaust. An engine in that config will free-rev fine but will not have any power.

Good luck
