Hello all,

I just got an 84 SVO (finally found one) and I am having a hard time getting it to turn on. The car cranks and all but it just does not want to turn on, already checked the fuel filter and its good, it also has a good fuel stream with good pressure in the line in the engine bay so it shouldn't be the fuel pump. The plugs are pretty decent I would say. the car eventually turns on after quite some time of trying to start it, and when it does manage to turn on it will just throw some white smoke form the exhaust. I would really appreciate all the help or suggestions I can get in trying to figure out what the problem is.

When it does finally start, does it run well and just blow smoke, or does it run like warmed over dog crap?

I'd do a compression test, and/or check the radiator and crank case for cross-contamination.

What color are the ends of the plugs and are they all the same color?

when it eventually turns on it has a bad ible till it warms up then get steady but wont pick up speed when i drive it, like if it was clogged or something. yeah i checked the plugs and they are all burnt equally and the compression is good. so i dont know what it might be. i heard from somebody it might be my IDLE CONTROLLER but i dont know how to tell if thats bad or not. is the little rod inside suppose to move around so much? any suggestions?

Get the computer read and get the trouble codes on the car. research what the codes mean. I would lean more towards an electrical issue and sensors not working correctly, which inturn would throw off the idle and starting. A lot of times its not the engine i.e. pistons, rings and valves, but the support system i.e. electrical and vacuum system sensors, that are not functioning correctly. One bad sensor could cause the Idle Control aka Idle Air Conrol to not respond correctly. Remember all sensors serve a purpose and were put on the vehicle for a reason, find the reason and check that system.

After rereading your post, your EGR valve might be stuck open. the EGR remixes exhaust into the Intake Manifold to get reburnt. Try taking off the EGR valve and just covering up the exsisting port in the intake manifold and see if the car runs better. If it does, thats your problem.

well i ran the computer (obd) and it just gave me code 67 which is the one that say that my Neutral Position switch/sensor or something like that. but other than that it doesnt say it has anything else.
