Haven't seen this before. In the process of freshening up my 91 2.3 and one of the head bolts on the intake side has a lot of exhaust soot build up on it and also in the corresponding bolt hole in the block. I have had another 2.3 mustang that I did the same thing to but it had no build up on any of the bolts. The head gasket was in good repair did not see any issues with the gasket. The car was running just fine but had a few oil leaks I decided to fix. Just wondering what the issue might be cracked head or block maybe? Just don't know at this point.
Well your best bet is to clean it up, and when you're ready to start it up spray some sappy water and see if there's any air... If there is something's broken.. While it's apart just do a thorough inspection of the manifold and the head/block and see if there's anything visible!
Is it still on the car or did you remove the whole engine for this tune up?
So was the leak caused just by a bad gasket? Or blowby from the valve cover breather or something similar
