Default Dyno tuned the Ranger

I tuned the truck this morning. 21 PSI @ 5600 RPM 209 RWHP 230 RWTQ. A/F 11.4 - 11.9 timing 23*. The big Powerstroke intercooler kept the air intake temp no hotter than 104* Coolant temp never went over 174*. Next I am putting in a posi and 4:10 gears.

4.10's with a turbo?? Maybe its different with a 2.3l, but i would recommend 3.55's. I dont believe you would be making the best power you could from your turbo with such short gears. Of course, this is all IMO.

That's a badazz 2.3 for sure!

I'd think the 410s would be a little steep as well, but like RyderJ's 92GT said, I base this on nothing but opinion.

Keep us updated!

At my shop we have an 86 SVO with 3.73 gears, and it feels like it could use a 4.10. With this particular set up, the turbo doesn't make any real boost until 4200 RPM. I think the turbo is probably a little big for the motor. It only has a 3.23 gear in it now. From 2000 RPM to 4000 RPM it cant get out of its own way. The 4.10 should help a lot with the low end grunt, and get the truck into boost quicker.

That may be true, but wouldnt he run out of gear before reaching the end of his boost with 4.10's??

I don't think so. The rear gear ratio multiplied by the transmission drive ratio will determine how fast you accelerate through each gear. If I make 21 PSI at 5400 RPM with a 3.23 rear gear, why should that number change with a 4.10. It should just get me there faster. The only difference I have ever seen on a gear swap is time it takes to get through the gear. I have never seen boost go down from a gear swap.

I guess i was kind of vague about what i was meaning. Yes, you would get there a hell of alot quicker and it wont affect the amount of boost. I was more or less saying you are going to hit redline before your turbo stops making power. I could be wrong, but ive heard of that before.

The relationship between available boost and redline will not change with different gears. The only thing that will change is how fast and how far you have gotten before you hit redline. If you redline woth a ton of boost still on tap you probably could use a smaller turbo.
