hahha I did that with my hurst going from 3rd to second but I meant to go to 4th.
Check to see how your hands are positioned on the shifter I use to hold it with my fist vertical so I would pull more towards my self which caused that.
The second I turned my hand horizontal I started to pull back straight which stopped that from happening. From what I have heard the MGW is the top shifter. I have not seen mine but my mechanic was comparing it to my hurst and then some one else has a PRO 5.0 and they were both impressed with how they made it.
Its a little expensive but I use to get 3rd gear lock out too with my hurst. There is suppose to be none in the MGW
This is what E36 M3 owners call the "money shift". Cause when this happens, 9 times out of 10 it costs a bunch of money to fix the damage.
Unfortuneately, the rev limiter cannot stop your motor from over-revving in this situation, and if anything was damaged, the valve springs will be the first to go as they are weaker than the other components.
Fortunately though, I don't think anything was damaged in your case. But if so, you'll know within a few thousand miles...which will suck.
Your accident probably happened because you trying to force the stick into 4th, instead of letting it go into 4th. The current GT shifter requires a light grip in order to shift properly. In fact, engaging 3rd and 4th gears is the easiest. The only reason to go to an aftermarket shifter, is if want to shorten the throws.
good thing is is that if you had have caused any damage at that kind of RPM it likely would have been catastrophic in nature, I think you would already know if something had gone boom!!!
I was reading an article somewhere that said when "manual shifting" (especially in quick shifting moments) leave your thumb out of the equation...in other words your thumb should stay out of the "shifting" business...keep your thumb up and pulled back a little close to your index finger...then you will be shifting only with the rest of your fingers...supposedly it will keep you from down shifting and/up shifting into the wrong gears...the thumb has a tendency to have you pull the gear shift closer to you and then you could end up in a lower than desired gear. Give it try!
Interesting idea, Mark25. When I thought about it (complete with doing the hand motions sitting here at the computer!), I realized I already shift like that in the Mustang. So far, I haven't missed too many shifts, so that might be a good theory!
The other thing that I did to make shifting more comfortable is to rotate the stock shift knob about 20° to the right, since I'm coming at it from an angle. One of my friends drove my car, and said, "I really like how they have the gear shift knob set up!" and I had to tell him that I did that!

Ha-ha I did the same thing while spraying more than just a little bit of nitrous!!!! It did not seem to hurt the trans for the here and now but I think a few more. I think I scared the guy next to me because I was screeching the tires at 80mph.
BTW I think my chocolate starfish inhaled a decent size patch of leather seat!!
And yes I still won… there is something so satisfying about beating a Z06!

I was just wondering if any one else has had this happen.Last night while racing an old Chevelle, when shifting from 3rd to 4th for some reason it goes into 2nd gear doing almost 85-95 mph. When I letting out the clutch the rear tires chirpped like if i hit the e-brake and I pushed in the clutch and went to 4th gear.I know the engine reved to probablly red line approx?Does anyone think I caused any damage or messed something up? p.s. I still beat that chevelle.
85 MPH in 2nd = 7700+ RPM !!!
95 MPH in 2nd = 8600+ RPM !!!
OUCH !!!

Well a week has gone by with no relavent indications of damage other than running a 13.36 last night at SA raceway. Seems to me these cars are built FORD tough.
You would know it if you would have damaged the engine. A bent valve, or slaming a piston into the head from rod stretch would both make it run like crap and be really noticable!
