Champion does not make a colder range plug and I wanted a 1 piece plug. So I installed plugs from Brisk Racing about a year ago and haven't had any issues.
I have a 2005 Mustang GT coming up on 60,000 miles and is time to replace the Spark Plugs.
After reading all the horror stories about the Spark Plugs breaking off in the heads when trying to remove them, Then hearing the story's about having to pay anywhere from $500 to $1500 to have this repaired by the dealers, I was having nightmares about doing this myself and the great possibility about having to have my car towed to the dealer "Stealer" to have it repaired.
"Bad taste in mouth and potential sore butt after this next one" I had my car at the "dealer" to have the alternator replaced under extended warranty "Twice" because the "re-manufactured" unit they put on failed the day after they put it on.
By the way if you didn’t know, under extended warranty they use re-manufactured parts for repair "not new”. And they don’t tell you this.
Anyway, the next day I drove my car to work to see if it was going to act up again and on the way home the motor started sputtering and would almost die every time I hit the gas pedal. Once I was moving it was OK until I slowed down and started to take off again.
Finally made it back to the "dealer" and they said they would keep it over night and see what happened.
The next day I received a call from the "Stealer" oops I mean "dealer”, and he Tell's me the MAFS went out. What? and had nothing to do with the two "New" alternators burning up and oh yeah it's going to cost another deductible.
Then he said if I didn’t have the ext warranty it would have cost me $500-$600 dollars to have it replaced so it was a good deal.
Just for grins I looked it up on the internet and found the MAFS anywhere from $59 at auto parts warehouse up to $289 from the dealer. So I figured OK, it was worth the deductible. keep in mind with having to remove 2 screws and one plug and reverse to re install. but $500-$600 is B.S and I hate being lied to..
NOW, back to the original story, the spark plugs from HELL.
before I left the "dealer" I asked him what he possibility was that I would be able to successfully replace the spark plugs.
He said the failure rate was 80-90% and that they would do it for $500 and an additional $40 dollars for every spark plug that broke off in the head. I was wondering why he didn't offer me dinner or a movie before he F'D me and he still had this I'm going to ra$ped you look in his eyes. I told him I would have to get back to him later.
Today, At this point I said the hell with it, I will try to replace the spark plugs myself and if they break off in the head, it would be a great time to install new cams, easier to sell the project to my better half if the heads have to come off, you know what I mean.
anyway, soaked the first plug with penetrating oil and let sit for 15 Minutes, grabbed the ratchet and bang it came loose and I thought for sure I broke the f'n thing off in the head, actually it came out with a couple little screeches and almost looked like new.
Hmmm, so the next one I tried I didn’t use the penetrating oils and grab the ratchet and bang again and after a couple little screeches it came right out, the next five came out the same way with no problem, Keep in mind I have 60,000 miles on this car now, so the last one broke loose but didn’t feel the same, Dammm! Very tight and felt like it was twisting apart in the head. Squirted a little penetrating oil on the spark plug shaft and let it sit for about 15 Minutes and tried it again. It screeched like hell and I figured DAMMM its gunna break! and then, it came out in one piece. yahoo it was over!! all eight came out and not one broke.
Now with all this being said, I was very lucky and would not reccomend doing this unless you understand the possability of them breaking off in the head and be ready for spending some $$$$$$$$.
If I had listened to the "stealer" I would have paid them $500 dollars and $40 additional for each one that had broken" which I’m sure they would of said at least four did it would have cost me $560. I'm sure not all dealers are like this but probably half of them are.
I ordered the Champion one piece spark plugs part number "7989" from spark plugs.com for $12.95 each,$123.00 with next day air shipping, they will be here tomorrow. Auto Zone wanted $21.95 plus shipping Total $196.50.
I think I may go back to the service adviser at the dealer and tell him I was able to replace the spark plugs myself and thanks for nothing but you still owe me dinner and a movie.
