Default 2006 Mustang GT: High Speed Vibration

I have a high speed vibration that starts around 90 mph and gets worse the faster I go. So I haven't been driving that fast anymore because I don't want to damage anything. I have had two JPC driveshafts, three spyder shafts and I currently have a shaftmasters on there now. The vibration wasn't there with the factory shaft. I recently install a detriot truetrac with a new FRPP 4.10 gearset. I install all new bearings except for the axle bearings. The gears are quiet and the pattern was great, the preload was spot on. I thought it was the driveshaft originally because I got most of the vibration out of it with hose clamps on the JPC shaft. Since I sent the other JPC shaft back I got a sydershaft. I waited to install the shaft because I was going to do it all at once when I did the reared build. I have checked the pinion angle I have tried -2 and -1. The pinion angle didn't change the vibration at all. The first driveshaft from spyder was really bad at 60. The second shaft was better and the third shaft was great to 90. This lead me to think that the problem was with the driveshaft, after installing the shaftmasters driveshaft the vibration had seemed to be less but it is still there. I have checked the balance and road force variation and rotated the tires. Still no change, I inspected the axleshaft when I did the install of the rearend. But I never checked them with a straight edge. I am really at wits end here. I will be installing new axle bearing soon and checking the integrity of the axle shafts. Any suggests?

Wow, you've been through everything. Do you have the stock upper control arm on there?

I have the blue steeda lower controls and the adjustable upper control arm. I currently have the pinion angle set at -1. I also have the steeda adjustable panhard bar.

Only other thing I can think of is the axle housing. Ford had some problems with some of the 8.8 housings early on. What year is your car?

I am on my 3rd spydershaft, same issues. The one I have now is the best, but starts at about 90 and gets worse like yours. I'm convinced it is the shaft as the stock was fine and the 3 shafts have all vibrated differently at different speeds.

When shaft 2 was in, I had it dynoed at JDM and they said the shaft was vibrating bad.

Pinion angle and indexing (rotating bolt holes) has done nothing.

I'm at wits end. I KNOW if I put that 2 piece tank back in it will be fine...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I mean, I'm sorry for your troubles, but I'm installing a d/s in the near future and these threads are scary to say the least.

UGH!!! The price for wanting to go fast...

Get a Powerhouse! I've never heard a single complaint from anyone who has one--including me.

Jared,
Like you and others on this thread we think your problem is somewhere in the axle. However, rest assured that you can return your Shaftmasters shaft for a full refund. We will even pay the return shipping. This guarantee applies to every Mustang shaft we sell and is good for 10 Days from date of delivery. After 10 days our normal warranty applies which would cover repair or reworking of your shaft.
We have sold over 130 shafts and have never had to honor this guarantee or warranty. We are totally serious in our assertion that we have sold over 130 and have had not a single comeback. This fact along with our guarantee should help to allay any fears members may have.

That said we do think the OEM shaft with the internal rubber offers the best NVH deadening. In our opinion our full foam insert offers the best NVH deadening of any aftermarket shaft and cardboard inserts would be 3rd on the list, which is what 4" cut-down Ranger shafts use. Unfortunately it is the internal rubber of the OEM shaft that makes it so heavy.

So is the vibration potentially damaging to anything in the car? Obviously, if the shaft is hitting something, that's one thing, but can the vibrations cause anything else to fail, including the shaft?

Also, how bad are these vibrations? Are they noticeable or are they rattling your teeth? Just curious.

Thanks!!

High speed vibrations, especially harmonic(noise) vibration probably will not cause catastrophic failure of the shaft. It can lead to premature wear of the shaft components (i.e. u-joints and splines) when ran for prolong periods of time while experiencing the vibration.Keep in mind that when you are in 4th gear(direct drive) the driveshaft is turning at the same rpms as the engine. In overdrive the driveshaft is turning approximately 30% faster than the engine. Depending on the tire size a Mustang that has a 4.10 gear ratio will be turning around 3000 rpms at 90 mph in overdrive while the driveshaft is turning approximately 3900 rpms. Change the ratio to 3.73 and at 3000 rpms it should be going closer to 100 mph. If 90 mph is a normal cruising speed and you are experiencing vibration at this speed I would be concerned about this.

Thought I would add this. I purchased an 07 GT new and have a mild drive train vibration that starts at about 68mph. The car is stock with a 5-speed. The vib is worst in coast and is unchanged in or out of gear. I notice little change with higher speed. I took it back once and they say they aligned the carrier bearing housing. Been hoping it would get worst and therefore be easier to find, but now at 10,000mi it is still there and unchanged. I guess it's time to haul it back in and let them try again. Has this been an issue with this car?
