Default Stewart Warner Gauge Ultra-Shift Light Install

Hey gang, I thinking about installing the Stewart Warner G.U.S. (Gauge Ultra-Shift Light) PN: 114949 Stewart Warner Performance

My question is has anybody installed one? If, so where did you tap in to get your tach signal?

Thanks!

You'll pull it off a coil.

I already have three SW gauges installed and had to work hard to figure out how to install some of them. This time I am trying to figure out how to install it (B4) I but it. The instructions just say to tap the tach terminal on the ECM (PCM).

There was a fairly recent thread on here where someone installed an aftermarket tach. Do some searches and you'll find it.

When you think about it... has anyone installed any brand/style tachometer in an S197? The source for the tach signal should be the same.

All we are looking for is where do we tap in the
(-) side of the coil, being we don't have a traditional style coil?

I installed a Programmable MSD Digital Shift Light in my Gauge Pod between the Speedo and the Tach and the signal comes from the Coil Pack on the Driverside Engine Bank closest to the firewall. When I get home from Work I will pop the Hood and confirm back which wire I tapped into, give me a few hours to respond. It works great and have had no issues what so ever.

Okay I checked my install, on the Coil on plug Set-up there is a Red Wire and a Yellow Wire with a Red Stripe leading to the Harness to the Coil. I tapped into the Yellow with Red Stripe for my Signal. Hope this Helps.

Hey Thanks Snakebits, This does help, I did a little research on this site and found some other useful info as well.

1. Some Shift Lights/Kits evidently have a programmable setting for COP's that allow you to set it up for getting the signal from just one cylinder.

2. Others utilize a Tach adapter.

Are you using a Tach adapter or did your Tach/light have a setting for one Cylinder signal?

The MSD uses the one cylinder signal however the Autometer Tachs require a Tach Adapter. I highly recommend the MSD unit for it is compact and on the side of the unit is an LED screen which displays your realtime RPM as well you can set 4 different shift points by as little as 100 RPM increments. I have an Autometer (Ultimate) Tach in my Race Car which is great for that application but in a street application the Stand alone Shift Light is much more discreet. Here is a link to the MSD unit.
