i am asking myself a lot of questions i wish some of you can help: - what are common causes of such a failure?
- custom tuning
- manually shifting
- big wheels
- how to prevent this from happening again?
- is there any aftermarket parts i should consider while rebuilding to help longer life?
- shift kit
- torque converter

As with anything that has moving parts, there could be a number of reasons it failed. But from what I understand, heat is the #1 killer of trannys. I'd put loss of fluid at #2 with wear and tear/abuse at #3. My
tranny is dead right now because I loss too much fluid and tried to make it home. That wasn't a good idea.
I've still yet to understand why people manually shift this thing. You can't do it as good or as efficient as the computer. If you wanted to manually shift the car, why not buy one with a manual transmission?
IMO, the
tranny should last awhile if you are driving normal. If you are beating on it, then you may want to consider a rebuild kit. Level 10 and TCI make them. There is a shop out here in my neck of the woods called Larry's Transmissions that has a very good rep in the S197 world. A higher stall converter is going to increase heat, which will shorten the life of components in the transmission. Just keep that in mind.
