Default Quick tuner question

I'm a noob and I know next to jack regarding tuners. Please forgive me if this question is painfully stupid.

How do tuners work? Do you just hook them up, do your thing and then un-hook them? That is to say, can't you just borrow one from somebody instead of buying one? -Or do you need to use it constantly/continually?

I'm not looking for something for free. I'm the kind of guy who has more $$ than cents (sense). However, if this is something that can be used just once and then never needed again then I'm thinking maybe I could "rent" one from somebody?

I recently bought my 2005GT and it came with a K&N CAI kit but I have no idea if the previous owner tuned it or not (I bought it from a dealer). It runs AWESOME and feels incredibly responsive but I'd love to know if there's more to be had. -Then again, I don't want to screw it up and regret that I ever tried to play with it.

I was wondering if maybe somebody would 'rent' me theirs for a weekend for $100 or so -provided they're simple to use and I won't permanently screw something up.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Peace

Once a tuner is used it's VIN locked to that car. Prevents sharing! You are correct on the rest. You plug it into the OBDII port, download the tune, and unhook it. Very simple process.

Good info -thanks much. However, I'm guessing (knowing many computer geeks) that someone must have unlocked these things by now. -Matters not -I'll just pick one up for myself, I suppose.

If you pick up a used one it may be unlocked if the previous owner reinstalled the stock tune. Get one and get a Bamachips tune and you will be very happy.

You could look at buying a used tuner from a local seller. That way if the tuner is locked the seller can unlock it for you, provided he or she still has the car. I bought a used tuner from a local seller. The seller assumed it was unlocked because he set it to factory HP, this doesn't unlock it, so we met again the next day and I showed him how to unlock it (I called diablo, and they told me what to do). I only paid $175 for a used diablo sport. The I bought a JLT intake from BAMA chips and I got three free tunes.

Sorry for the confusion... I meant it would be VIN locked while in use. Once returned to stock it is usable on another vehicle.
