Default Is there a 1st gear RPM "governor"?

Howdy...

Was out this evening and found myself on an open stretch of road.

So I let my '06 GT loose. In 1st gear, I stomped on the gas, not paying attention to the RPM's, my car accelerated to a certain point and hesitated. I shifted to 2nd and everthing was fine.

Question: Why did my car hesitate on hard acceleration, in 1st gear? It felt as if I hit a max RPM and the car wouldn't go beyond that RPM point?

I've accelerated hard before with no problems, but I probably shifted to 2nd earlier than I did this evening.

Any comments?

The rev limiter is set at 6250 rpms. It could be you hit, and then were bouncing off the rev limiter.
By your post, I am guessing you have a manuna, right?
Any idea how fast you were going when you stomped on it, and when you shifted into 2nd?
First gear runs out around 45mph ish (on mine with 3.31s).
Probably just hit the rev limiter. Try it again, watch the rpms and see if it does it again.

I would think he would know that his car was hitting the rev limiter, know?

Anyway my car with 3.55's does hit 40 before redlining in first. See how fast your car is going before it hesitates.

That clearly hit the rev limiter and the engine shut down until the RPMs were back in a safe range.

Default RPM Limiter

Twig

Hesitate or buck as though its out of gas?
The first time I did it was same scenario as you except a ricer with the bondo wing and fart can was making the turn in front of me. I didn't even realize he was trying to race, so I kept it in 2nd and played with him by goosing the throttle till it hit the limiter.
Felt like an idiot. Because I kept putting my foot down wanting to go faster! The car kept bucking and I finally realized I have to shift.

Yes, I did apologize to her for how I treated her and promised I would buy her some polished bullits.

No, it just "shut down", I shifted to 2nd when this happened and all seemed fine.
From the replies here, I'm sure I hit the rev limiter. And, yes, this is the 1st time I've pushed the car to that point. Won't do it again.

Was going about 45 mph, shifted to 2nd and was at 60 before I let off the gas.

Sounds like a rev limiter to me.

It's there to protect the car from being over rev'd. You won't kill it by hitting it, it's not glass. But by the same token you're not making any more power on a stock tune so you might as well shift before you get there.

Very well could of been the TCS. If you hit the slightest bump at WOT(causing wheel spin) then TCS will shut off the engine momentarily.

The rev limiter is there to prevent you from overspinning the engine. It can be annoying but is a nice thing to have!.

Actually, I was wondering if this could be the cause of what I experienced. TCS was on.

But, I think I hit the rpm limiter.

The symtoms are similar bt if your wheels weren't slipping I'd still suspect the rev limiter..

Reason I suspected TCS did it is because when it hits the rev limiter it just starts that popping sh*t and doesn't actually shut power down.

Depends on how hard you hit the limiter! When I was running 4.30s I hit it so hard once that I thought the engine had gone into failsafe.

It sounds like the limiter to me. Next time leave the TCS off to take it outta the equation. I never mess around with anyone while i have the TCS on anyway.
