Default Engine Oil Change

Hello
Yesterday I took my GT for oil change in a local shop. They guy put a full synthetic engine oil rated 5w-40. I know that the recommended oil is 5w-20. Will the 5w-40 harm the engine..? Should I change it immediately or use it..?

Thanks guys in Advance

I would change it out to 5w20. I have heard that some put 5w30 in their car because the oil is a little thicker but I really don't think it's necessary. The engine is designed to run off of a thinner oil because of the better/closer tolerances inside the engine.

The engine tolerances call for 5w20. It could also mess up the valve timing.

Upon further thought you should take it back to them and tell them to follow directions!

How can they miss it? It's right there on the 710 cap.

The variable cam timing depends on 5-20w to operate properly.

+1000 Why leave the single most important part of your engine maintenance to kids at some lube place. I am so picky about my oil that I have changed it about 10 times and I only have 16K on my car. I change it before every race and sometimes after. It's $18 for an FL820s and 6 quarts of 5W20 Moto Syn Blend. Cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned.

Where do you find the oil at such a cheap price? Mine is close to $50 for the oil and filter.

Walmart sells a 5 qt jug of 5W20 Moto Syn Blend for like $12. The filter is about $4.

Edit: 2 things to watch out for when changing your oil....That 5 qt jug has that plastic seal under the cap and last time I changed it, part of that seal went down in the jug and I did not even notice it. Luckily it got caught in the funnel before it went down in the engine so watch out for that that. Also, always double check the seal on the filter to make sure it didn't stick to the engine. For me, it almost always stays on the engine after I remove the old filter from the block.

if you want to run mobil 1, you should use the 0-20, as it's been reformulated to meet ford specs. syn oils are typically a bit thinner than their conventional counterparts, so the 0-20 m1 will be closer to the 5-20 moto than the 5-20 m1 is.
