I've recently been thinking about a new exhaust setup, and I was hoping I could hear some opinions on what I should do next.
I'm going to be installing my thumpr's within the week, and I'm thinking about going a little bigger exhaust-wise. Basically, the louder the better as long as its not raspy. My setup now is stock headers, mac offroad x, and borla stingers.
Once my cams are in, I'm concerned my idle is still going to be too quiet for me. How my exhaust is now, is certainly plenty loud at wot, but at idle its just too quiet for me. I was thinking about putting cutouts in my setup now, although I'm not sure how close I can get it to the engine. Keep in mind, power loss isn't a concern, I have heard the closer you get to the engine the greater the loss in torque. My other thought was to have my friend custom bend some straight pipes. I was thinking something like 4" all the way back, but I was wondering if I would still need a mid pipe? I tried to search for the answer but no avail.
I might have read somewhere a long while back about needing the midpipe for balance in pressure, but I just want to know for sure if I could do split 4" pipes all the way back. If so, do you think it would sound to raspy?
my friend didnt have an h pipe and it sounded real good like it had a cam but his car was stock

I won't be doing anything until my cams are in, I surely will see how I like it. I know it will be a big improvement, but again I'm just getting opinions, and trying to figure out what is possible. I've never heard of anyone doing 4" straights and I'm interested in trying it myself, if of course it's reasonable.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the sound.
Thank you. I've listened to both of brenspeeds thumpr vids on youtube, and then a vid of dynomax bullets dumped. I can surely tell a difference from the stock cams to the thumprs in the brenspeed cars, but I'm not sure what their exhaust setups were in those. If my car turns out to sound like either of them, or comps own video, I'm going to want to change things up a bit.
You could have someone bend you a set of SS straight pipes for $100.
How do you think they'll sound with my cams? Four inches is quite a bit larger than the 2.5 they are now, and without a midpipe or muffler I'm curious to see if they'll be too raspy. I guess there's nothin' like just doing it and seein'.
I don't have a midpipe and I LOVE the sound. It made it a TON louder and I didn't notice that much of a difference in power between true duals and my bassani X. I doubt I'm making any extra power but it made the sound MUCH more deep.

Thanks man, that's what I wanted to know. Do you have any type of muffler? Deeper is fine with me, as long as it's not droned.
I have an offroad x on the car but the straightpipes sit in the garage. They are obviously loud but sound quite a bit like an old john deere tractor without the cats.Still can't part with them though!

No problem man, I'm happy to answer any questions you have...My current setup is magnaflow high flow cats, borla stingers, and of course the true duals. Like I said, having no crossover in the midpipe may have hurt power a little bit or had no effect, but paired with the stingers and high flow cats its really really deep. I started with the stock H and borlas, it was too quiet, so I added an X pipe with stock cats. I didn't notice really any change in sound, jsut a bit more pickup at WOT. Then thats when I got the true dual system and I was in love with it. Made it sound more old school to me so I stuck with it. It was great then but whe I added the high flow cats it completely cleaned up the sound, making it scream above 3k RPMs. As for as the drone, I drive an auto so I'm not sure I can help you with that, its not too bad when I'm just cruising.

Also I was suggested to not gut the cats with this set up because I was told it would sound too tinny and ruin the whole sound of the exhaust. Magnaflow makes a great High flow cat.

i would just go to 3inch if anything 4 inches is too big. if you go to big its not gonna scavenge the exhaust out of the cylinders as well. if anything i would just leave the exhaust how it is and put electric cut outs after the mid pipe if you want cut outs. and throw some longtubes on there after that you wont want straight pipes.

@ A7X1031: I was hoping to stay catless. It sounds to me if I were to do that it may not sound as good as you say yours is.
@ 06281GT: Would having 4inches affect that? I didn't know that, I thought the stock headers would keep that in check. And about the cutouts, it's what I've been wanting to do for quite some time, but I was hoping to be able to have them placed before my x pipe, because I don't think there would be as significant of a difference from the exhaust just dumping out of my stingers. Whenever I mention that though, whoever I'm speaking to always gives me the loss in torque comment, which again I'm not worried about.
