The spare parts manager at my local ford says he has an SCT SF hand held tuner in stock, he couldn't provide me with more info cuz he doesnt know much about them, he's had it for over a year and a half, its the last piece he has.
Now, ive never heard of the SF model, i tried lookin for it online and the closest thing i could find was the SCT Xcalibrator 2 SF Model 9415.
Im planning on getting a tune from Tillmans or Bamachips so i want to make sure im getting a good tuner.
Whats the difference between the SF and the X3?
Should i just go ahead and buy the SF or will i eventually regret not waiting for the X3?
SF i would think stands for "Strategic Flash" which is what the device is. depending on his price i would just buy a new or used x3. i bought mine off of somebody right here in the classifieds for a great price. look in electronics, tools, and power adders. i've seen them listed in all three places.
I would just buy the tuner from the place you want your tune from. usually if you dont like the tune or something is wrong with it, they will fix it for free.

I would rather buy a brand new X3 from Tillmans or Bama but problem is i live in the middle (of nowhere) east and its very hard to come buy tuners, let alone an SCT.
See i just bought a steeda CAI the other day from the dealer and didnt buy the tuner cuz i hadnt heard of it. Now ive got a brand new CAI and no tuner an im really itching to install it!
Basicsally I just want a tuner that i can install a custom tune on. So if the SF works just as well as the X3 id buy it now rather than wait a month or more to order one.
Whats the difference between the SF an the X3, dont they do the same thing?

The SF just means (like I said above) that it already has generic tunes pre installed. You can still get it and overwrite them with your own tunes.

Living where you are shouldn't stop you from ordering from Tillman or Bamachips. I got mine from Bama. As long as UPS delivers where you are, no problem. You can get 3 customized tunes for your CAI with the tuner - say an 87 Octane, a 91 or 93 torque and/or race tune.

Hey, just though i would update anyone who is vaguely interested in this thread (although doesnt look like it! )
I bought the SCT SF 9415 after some vigorous researching, got it for cheaper than it would have cost me to order an ship a new X3/SF3 so i am fairly happy.
I erased all the pre programmed tunes with the LiveLoad software by erasing device and ordered 3 new Bamachips tunes. Put them on with some minor hickups but sorted it eventually.
So if anyone is thinking about buying an older SCT tuner but is worried about compatibility issues..dont be its a sinch. Everything you need is on the SCT website an on the CD provided.

This is exactly what I did.. when I changed from Steeda to Bama tune ( I love all three tunes),& every one should make sure to not delet there stock tune.

Good deal So how do you like the CAI with the Bama tunes?
Three abbreviated letters ma man..OMG!!
Ive read all the threads about what a difference a CAI and tune makes and thought i might be a little disapointed when it came to it, but in no way did that happen! The torque tune is insane, pulls real good. Smokin tires in 2nd and chirps into 3rd!

+1 I have mine backed up to the computer as well incase the tuner ever malfunctions.. from these two files sct can take them and re create your stock file
