Ok, I am pretty new to the tuner world. I purchased a JLT CAI and a SCT Tuner about 6 months ago. It came with three tunes, 87, 91 and 93 octane. I used the 93. I also chose the JLT CAI option on the hand hand tuner. I figured I was all done. There was some noticeable difference but I was not blown away by any stretch.
Now as I am reading threads from you guys about all kinds of different tunes from all these different tuners, Man, I am lost! Help and old school guy out! Are there different tunes I can buy?
Am I correct in what I am gathering from all this? Are there other tuners I can contact that will have better tunes for my SCT? If so, how do I contact them, what are the average costs, who do you guys recommend and what can I expect?
Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
I have an sct tuner also and I have two tunes on factory tune and one that turns my rear 02 sensors off. The tune that's in my ecu now is the dyno tune. Since I have forced induction dyno tune was necessary. The shop that did my tune is an SCT dealer. So if I need any tune adjustment I have to go to him, he has the programs from SCT. Now if you wanted to have your car tuned they can do that. If you plan on doing any mods then a dyno tune is going to be needed.

Basically, there are 3 different type of tunes available:
-Canned(from the tuner manufacturer). They are considerably better than a stock tune, but are on the conservative side.
-Custom(from a specialized tune supplier). They are written by specialists who can squeeze a little more power out of the engine. They also tighten up the throttle response a lot more than canned tunes making the car more driveable, and can be easily modified for additional bolt-on mods. The most popular custom tuners are BamaChips and Brenspeed. You can check out their tune offerings on their websites.
-Dyno(done by a tuner on a dyno). They are required for heavily modified engines with either F/I, T/C, modified heads and cams, etc. They can also be done for N/A engines to squeeze out a few more hp than a custom tune, but are not normally considered to be much "bang for the buck" in this application due to the high cost of the dyno runs.
Thanks guys this was very helpful. I installed the 93 octane tune that came with my unit when I installed the CAI. I just didnt see that big of a change. Maybe my expectations were too high. I am very interested in checking out the other more radical tunes out there. Again, thanks for the help.

Wait, if I got longtube headers, would I need to get a dyno tune?
LT headers, offroad X and H pipes, and CMDP's are the additional bolt-on mods I was referring to that a custom tuner can write a tune for. I should have been more specific. Sorry 'bout that.

Most people expect noticeable acceleration improvement only down low. There is not much you can do to these cars to improve the low end torque. Most mods negatively effect this except for a roots supercharger or nitrous. I am sure you picked up 20HP up top which would be noticed in your 1/4 times.
