im not sure if the mustang has a governor, but I can tell you that it's not illegal to remove it. But, if Ford did put a governor in it, it's not because they're trying to keep you from getting tickets. If Ford put a governor in it, there is something physically about the car that would make it have problems over a certain speed. One example is the cougar/thunderbird. Those cars have a governor at 106, because after that the driveshaft (because of the length) would start to flex.
There is a governor on the GT500 to 155 mph and on the V6 Mustang to 115 mph or 119 mph, I can't remember that number. I don't think there is a governor on the GT.
I read somewhere it was drag limited it 145 mph or so. The S197 is a beautiful car, but it has very poor aerodynamics. Since there is nothing you can do about that, the only remedy is the brute force method...more hp.

The computer tuning (PCM) limits revs and top speed. I believe a tuner such as SCT3 can alter these. Revs stock are limited to 6250 on the GT and top speed I believe 155 mph. Why would you even want to remove the top speed limit? And for revs the general accepted safe level for limit is 6500.

Check Travelers post above. There is a speed limiter on the GT and you can remove it with your handheld tuner. I've got mine turned off...why?...just because I could I guess. I think it's actually set at 143 mph from the factory.

That car won’t get close to 200mph.
Ford sets their speed limiters at the point where the OEM tires are rated for. For example, my F-150 has tires rated at about 110mph or something and I have had it up to 105 on GPS. It read 112 on the speedo.
The Mustang GT limiter is set at 155. When I had mine on the dyno we shut it off completely. I got it up to 188.6 on GPS last week.

Stock the governor is set to around 145, without it you can hit about 165. I know a guy who was able to take his 'Stang out to a 2.5 mile oval track and he hit 165 with a '08 auto GT with a Predator canned tune.

actaully your wrong, the car does. it does about 189. you are completely and utterly wrong. i own the car.
"It's a rare occasion when CAR and evo, two of the worlds most esteemed automotive enthusiast publications award their highest 5 star ratings. Yet the Maserati GranSport received 5 star ratings from both. Why? Maybe it's the Ferrari engineered V8 engine which punches out 400 horsepower. Or, its F1 derived Cambiocorsa paddle-shift transmission which can change gears in 1/10th of a second. This combination and the car's innate balance produce world class performance; a 4.75 second 0-60mph sprint, a 1/4 mile time of 12.8 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph."
everything is a one of a kind. you wont be able to search this online, they will say max is 180. and 180 is prety close, and ours is upgraded. its max is 189-193. the WHOLE CAR IS UGPRADED!
