anybody changed their convertible top themselves. is this a diy job. guy quoted me $1800 for a new top and repleacement but i can get a brand new oe top off of ebay for less than half of that. any advice would be helpful

What a ***** of a job (at least it was for me)
I did it on my 1989, wasn't happy with the result !

I should say, I'm a mechanic with 54 years experence. Even though this is not a mechanical job, you'd think I could do it.

I took my 1995 to a Seat & Top Shop, he charged me something like the price you were quoted. I couldn't be happier with the job.

Also, something to consider is........
There's no guarantee with the top from ebay !

they claim a 5yr warranty. but i guess thats besides the point. i have developed holes from the frame. its a tsb issue but im past my warranty. pretty good with a wrench so if i can i would like to try to change it myself.
