I agree 100%. I'm pretty sure the FR500C's are still 3100# and those suckers are damn near a tube chassis car.

I had an 86 with a carbed, all iron 302 with a cage and all the street stuff and it weighed 2750lb with fuel. It was also made of tin foil though

Great idea, who would want to listen to that?

Nothing quite like being stranded on the side of the road to save a few pounds.

Sure, that doesn’t make it obnoxiously loud for drives longer than 15 minutes

20lbs for $370+ labor, smokin deal

$180 and saves how much weight?

$700 for 20lb. I'm speachless.

$500 for another 20lb. Outstanding!

I'm only seeing about 160lbs and that's being generous. And at a cost of only about $1750 and that doesn't include the labor for the flywheel and the seats!

Of course it is. Your wallet is so thin that it doesn’t make your butt cheek numb.
Being that I'm building to a track only N/A road course car, my mods are all part of the process. As for cost you assume too much, as I have installed everthing, but the rear end gears on my car. And every part that I installed, other than the Corbeau seats, was used (cheaper in price), or in some cases free. And let's not forget the performance gains for some of these weight reducing mods, ie., aluminum driveshaft and flywheel.

Yeah, you're not going to win the weight battle with an 05+ Mustang unless your just planning to gut the thing to nothing. Even then they aren't the most aerodynamic of cars!

And weight transfer................You need to take a sledge and beat the firewall so you can move the motor about 3" back if you really want it to be right. Then hack out the back half of the car and get rid of the three link and go to a 4 link or ladder bars.

There's a reason why Skinny kid doesn't build 05+ up cars anymore.

If your gonna drag this car the odds are against you and you'll need to spend a load of money OR you better making a LOT of power!!

LOL! Well... I'm impressed! I only understood the bolded things in your reply.

So basically JS, you're limited for weight reduction on our cars. You can do a lot of simple things, but you'll have to make up for that difficult to remove weight the PLStang way... More power!

Just to let you all know, this is a strictly racing car. I am fairly good with cars and have done some mods on my friends' rides for them. Also lets just put all inhibitions aside and say that money is not an issue. I just came into a little bit when my uncle died, and I got my passion for cars from him, so I figured this would be an appropriate project to put the money toward.

My mods are part of working toward a N/A autocross and road racing car that I can run on track days. You assume too much with you comments. No Labor here, I installed all the mods listed. All mods the listed, except for the Corbeua seats were either attained used and cheap, or in some cases free. You seem to have forgetten that some of these mods increase performance, as well as weight reduction. BTW, my butt cheeks are doing much better, and various other body parts, thank you. It's all because of the Corbeau Racing seats. The oem seats had me on the verge of having to see a chiropractor. If anything, I saved money money with the Corbeau seats, if you consider the multiple visits to the chiropractor I would have needed, LOL.

Don't want to incur the wrath of fellow member Squidd, but, on "the Mustang Source" forum there is someone who detailed this situation.., whether or not that he was factual is not up to me. I'm just passing it along to others. I haven't been to that site in a while due to this site being the most "Family-Like" that I have subscribed to.

I've dabled in mods and racing!

The motor is too far forward in these cars and doesn't make for good weight distribution and there by weight transfer. The FR500CJ's are missing pieces of the firewall for a reason.

Skinny Kid is a Chassis builder and builds a lot of the nicer SSO cars and such. He won't do a S197 anymore. They just aren't a great platform to work with.

The suspension on these cars while good is not good enough to get much below a 1.40 60'. You really need to back half the car. Basicly remove everything from under the car from the rear seats back and replace it with a drag race suspension (4 link or ladder bars).

However, most of those things make it un-streetable and are extremely time consuming and expensive. All for a car that isn't aerodynamic to begin with.

So you work with what you got and you make a load of power. That way you can make up time on the back half of the track. That's what I do.

However, if I was to put my power train in say an 03 Cobra with the proper suspension and such. The car would go deep 8's. Compared to going 9.0's in my car now.

Hope that cleared up some of my ramblings!

Here are some pics of a Stang built for racing in Europe. I am sure you can get a few pointers from these pics to put yours on a diet.

What...

on....

Earth....

And thanks PL, you explained it perfectly! I still don't know what a 4-link or ladder bar suspension is though LOL!

I love it when people have convinced themselves so thoroughly that they can’t even see alternate viewpoints. Doomed to fail.

I have spent countless hours shaving grams to improve on track performance in my lifetime. There isn’t a thing you are going to tell me that I have not already done, including all the mistakes. And no matter how you go at it when trying to shave weight the point of diminishing returns shows up real soon. Any meaningful weight savings always comes down to a lot of time and money. And time is money.

I don’t expect you to listen though. Clearly you are the expert.

We are going through the process of weight reduction. It's a problem compounded by the fact that significant weight is added, with a power adder and cage alone. Vehicle is not used for transportation anymore, so liberties can be taken. It certainly is not the ideal platform for a drag car, but seems to evolve into one despite logic and common sense saying "don't". For us, we're trying to stay at around the same power level (with 22lbs boost), while catapulting a 3550lb (goal) brick down the strip rather than a 3850lb one.
