Default question about gear change

ever since i had 4.10s installed i have had a whine problem. the gears had been replaced 4 times and they whined everytime. so the shop refunded me my money and swapped in a whole untouched rear end with factory 3.31s. my car is a 07 so 3.31s is what i had in the first place. i was wondering if there will be a big diffence in et at the track from going back to 3.31s?

i currently have jlt, sctx3, tune by jms, steeda economy plates, steeda udps, upr or x pipe, powerhouse ds, bmr lca's, bmr adjustable uca, and 275 40 17 nitto 555r's. with the 4.10s but before the uca and ds my best was a 12.99@107. i coulda have done better on the 60' since it was only a 1.91 and the heat/humidity down here is killer.

Yes, 4.10s to 3.31s will be a big drop in acceleration.

You might go from a 12.99 to a 13.4 (+/- .1) or somewhere around there, depending on your driving abilities.

You may have had a bearing in the axle area shot. Those will whine when broken along with gears.

(I.e. axle bearing)

well i talked to another shop and they told me that it was a pinion bearing problem. they claim ford set a recall on gt500s cuz of this and sine ford has redesigned the pinion bearing. i was shocked to hear that the new bearing cost like $80! anyone else heard of this?

Huh, most people gain about .3-.4 seconds it seems with a gear change. On an auto, going 3.31s to 4.10s sometimes will gain a whole half second!

Rereading your post, you should be in low 13s with that DS and UCA.

Knew it was a bearing.

Hmm... Pinion bearings aren't that expensive. You can get a whole rebuild kit for $75 here. Rear End Installation Kit at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

Unless you are talking about a redesigned pinion bearing... Which I don't know how it could be redesigned???

yea pinion bearing. with the drag radials the ds and uca should get me into 12s. on the night of the 12.99, more seat time woulda got me a better time.

Bearings should have been replaced on every one of those gear installs.

On all 4 installs? Sounds like you had a defective axle housing.

Tough to say. It could be harmonics or 4 bad installs. But I sincerely doubt if you had 4 bad gear sets or bearings.

That's what my problem was, bad housing. Put in a brand new FRPP rear end with new FRPP 3:73 gears & bearing kit, no more whine.

So if you buy a rear end from newtakeoffs (or anyone else)how can you check it to know it will not whine. What is the difficulty in removal and install verses a gearset. I want to change gears but hear to much negative feedback about doing so.
