Default 2009 Mustang GT Engine has clicking sound when cold.

I'm not sure if its been there since new, and I'm just now noticing it more (I bought it this past summer), but my 2009 GT has a faint clicking sound that follows the rpm's coming from the motor when its cold. The sound fades as the car warms up. I don't think its the usual noisy 3 valve sound that they all seem to make. The car has just 3000 miles on it. Its more noticeable with the windows closed than open. Is this common, or should I take it to the dealer to be checked?

  • The injectors click
  • The cam followers, etc will make a bit of noise for a while on colder days because it takes a while for the oil to get to them
  • Mod motors have always suffered from a little piston slap when cold too
If it goes away after a few minutes chances are it is simply a cold motor.

Are you sure its coming from the engine? My car had a rattling sound that I thought was the cats breaking up and rattling. Turns out it was a dust shield on the transmission. It would only happen when I started the car up cold and increased with RPMS and then went away when the car was warmed up. Look for a thin piece of metal located between the cats. If it is missing bolts that is the problem.

Has it made the sound since you've owned it?

Default Faint ticking from motor when cold

I think it HAS been making this noise since new. It's not really right to call it a ticking, or even clicking, I'm going to try and spell it phonetically. Nitnitnitnitnit. Kind of like a very low volume version of what a lot of diesel engines sound like. It is more noticeable when the motor hasn't warmed up, and seems to lessen with mid grade fuel as opposed to regular.

Does it make the sound at idle or only when the engine is under load?

Its louder under load, and is more noticeable in 3rd than in 2nd during light acceleration.
